According to Bleacher Report, in a 115-127 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Wilt Chamberlain scored 72 points for the San Fransisco Warriors, finishing 29 of 48 from the field and 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

David Thompson (73 points)

As a report by sportingnews.com, Basketball Hall of Famer and former first overall pick David Thompson scored a career-high 73 points for the Denver Nuggets in a loss against the Detroit Pistons in April 1978.

Thompson scored 73 points on the final day of the regular season to win the NBA scoring title, which he lost by percentage points to San Antonio's George Gervin.
