"Tori was a champion..... A beacon that shone bright! We are heartbroken and our prayers are with her family and friends," the statement concluded.
The athlete was one of the US stars at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won gold in the 4x100m, silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m. These successes were joined in London 2017 by a double world championship over 100 m and 4x100 m.
Tori Bowie was found dead at her Florida home on May 2, TMZ reported.
It was the athlete's relatives who called the police because they hadn't heard from Tori Bowie for several days.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office in Florida reported that a squad car drove by the athlete's home on the afternoon of May 2 and, given the situation, decided to enter the home, where they found Tori Bowie's lifeless body.
The preliminary investigation found no signs of violence in the home. However, the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office told TMZ that they are investigating the incident pending autopsy results,
Sources interviewed by TMZ Sports report that the athlete suffered from severe depression.
Tori Bowie had not competed officially since June 4, 2022, when she finished fifth in the 200m in Florida in 23.60.
The year before, the athlete hadn't even made it to the practice runs for the Tokyo Olympics.
Her last major competition was at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where she finished fourth in the long jump with a 6.81 (-0.4).
In the 100 m sprint, where she defended her title, she did not get past the semifinals.
Bowie was one of the most well-known athletes on the US team because, in addition to her sporting achievements, she also worked as a model and was featured in a Valentino campaign and in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue.
Teammates including Noah Lyles, two-time world 200m champion, have bid farewell to Tori Bowie on social media. The athlete hadn't updated her social media since October 2019, when she still dreamed of competing in Tokyo. May she rest in peace.
