Camille Muffat: The Olympic champion who died tragically at age 25

With the Olympic Games to be held in the French capital, Paris, in 2024, the memory of Camille Muffat will be more vivid than ever.

Muffat was one of the greatest French swimmers in history, whose life came to an abrupt end shortly after she retired. Let's take a look back at the story of one of the prodigies of French sport.

A specialist in the 200m metres individual medley during her teenage years, Muffat revealed her talent at the age of 15 during the French championships in 2005, achieving a major feat, especially at her age.

During the competition, she managed to come first ahead of prodigy Laure Manaudou, even beating Manaudou's national record.

Her rise was rapid, enabling her to compete in the senior ranks and win her first European medal in 2007 in Debrecen, Hungary.

Qualified for her first Summer Olympics, Muffat went to Beijing in 2008, where she finished no better than 5th in the 4x200m freestyle.

It wasn't an exceptional start, but it boded well for the young swimmer, who continued to make steady progress.

In the short course, Muffat then claimed gold at the 2010 World Championships in Dubai in the 200m freestyle.

At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, Muffat reached the podium and won a bronze medal in the 200m and 400m freestyle events.

Her biggest career result, however, would come at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where all eyes would be on the young swimmer.

Muffat brought home three medals for France: bronze in the 4x200m freestyle, silver in the 200m freestyle and gold in the 400m freestyle.

It was a superb achievement among many others for the swimmer, who nevertheless announced the end of her career in 2014, aged just 24.

The end of her career was synonymous with a new life for Muffat, who surely wanted to enjoy some peace and quiet after many years spent at the highest level from a very young age.

Invited to take part in the French reality TV show 'Dropped' in 2015, featuring a number of current and former top sportsmen and women, she travelled to Argentina for the filming.

It was during this trip on 9 March 2015, that the swimmer boarded a helicopter alongside other athletes such as Florence Arthaud and Alexis Vastine. During take-off, two helicopters collided with one another. There were no survivors.

At the time of her death, Muffat was just 25 years old. It was a sad end for one of the most famous faces in French sport, who had decided to retire from her sport to start enjoying life. But it was all in vain.
