The image of Cristiano Ronaldo crying uncontrollably after missing a penalty against Slovenia at Euro 2024 will go down in history.

Was it a penalty?

However, the penalty that made CR7 cry was highly controversial and left the Slovenians furious.

Diogo Jota against all

In the 102nd minute, at 0-0, Diogo Jota picked up the ball and ran into the Slovenian penalty area until he collided with Drkusic and went down.

Penalty!

Referee Daniele Orsato did not hesitate, awarded a penalty and yellow booked Drkusic. This gave Portugal the opportunity to take the lead just before the second half of extra time.

"No penalty"

But did Orsato take the correct decision by awarding a penalty? According to Iturralde Gonzalez, Cadena SER's head referee, it was "not a penalty".

Interpretative play

The former referee thought it was a "very interpretative play" with "no absolute truths".

Jota invading the defender's space

"For me, it's not a penalty," Iturralde told SER, and added that Jota invades "the defender's space" and that "the Portuguese wants to pass into a space where the defender is already standing still".

Ronaldo vs Oblak

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and faced Jan Oblak, whom he still knew from his time in LaLiga and the derbies against Atletico Madrid.

Tears of a champion

The Portuguese fired a fine penalty, to the right-hand corner, but Oblak kept it out with a spectacular save. Minutes later, at half-time in extra time, CR7 was crying uncontrollably.

Diogo Costa to the rescue

It was not Ronaldo, but Diogo Costa who was Portugal's hero of the night, as the Portuguese goalkeeper saved all three of Slovenia's penalties. Portugal will now face France in the quarter-finals. Will Ronaldo score his first goal of the tournament against Mbappe and Les Bleus?
