Kelvin Kiptum breaks the course record! A look at the most successful runners in London Marathon history
Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum broke the London Marathon course record on Sunday, finishing with a time of two hours, one minute, and 25 seconds.
The 23-year-old was over one minute quicker than Eliud Kipchoge's previous course record, and 16 seconds away from breaking his world record he set in Berlin last year.
Despite the Kenyan record-breaking time, the event was a fantastic day for charity, with thousands of amateurs running for great causes across the UK and the world.
Charity is at the forefront of the event. Still, some of the fastest runners in the world fight to become the elusive London Marathon winner, with many writing their names in the history books multiple times.
After Kiptum's incredible performance, here are the runners with multiple London Marathon victories!
Moroccan long-distance runner Abdelkader El Mouaziz is a two-time London Marathon runner, winning the event in 1999 and 2001.
As of September 2007, the Moroccan runner holds the record for most marathons ran under 2:10, with 13. He has also won the Madrid marathon and the New York marathon.
Kenyan Olympic bronze medallist, Wilson Kipsang, won the London Marathon twice in 2012 and 2014, holding the former course record of two hours, four minutes, and 29 seconds.
Kipsang is a former marathon world record holder, with a time of two hours, three minutes, and 23 seconds, which he set at the 2013 Berlin marathon. He's also won the New York and Tokyo marathons.
Legendary Ethiopian runner, Tsegaye Kebede, won the London Marathon twice in 2010 and 2013, securing times of 2:05:19 and 2:06:04.
Since competing in major sporting events in 2007, Kebede has won six marathons and secured a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Dionicio Ceron is a former Mexican marathon runner who is the only athlete to win the London Marathon three years in a row (1994-1996.)
Ceron represented Mexico twice at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games. As well as his three London Marathon victories, the Mexican has six other marathon wins, with his last being in 2000.
Portuguese runner Antonio Pinto won the London Marathon in 1992, 1997, and 2000, becoming one of four runners to win the race three or more times.
Pinto competed at four consecutive Olympic Games from 1988 to 2000 and won the 10,000-meter World Championship gold in 1998.
Martin Lel won the London Marathon on three separate occasions, securing the win in 2005, 2007, and 2008, setting a then-course record in his third victory, with a time of 2:05:15.
Lel has won all five half-marathons he has competed in and secured the 2003 World Half Marathon Championship.
Eliud Kipchoge is widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time, winning a record-breaking four London Marathons (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) and holding the course record of 2:02:37.
