"According to initial findings, the cyclist may have been blinded by the sun and drove through a red light," Antwerp wrote in its statement.
According to Antwerp, Matazo tested negative for a saliva and alcohol test and was not speeding when the accident happened.
"Without wishing to prejudge the investigation into the accident, all elements, including the statements of witnesses, point to an unfortunate accident," the Belgian club added.
Matazo is reportedly "extremely affected" by the accident, according to Antwerp's statement.
The cyclist sustained serious injuries and has passed away, per Belgian news outlet VRT NWS.
Matazo is currently on loan from France's AS Monaco to Antwerp until the end of the season.
The Belgian youth international made 10 appearances for Antwerp so far without scoring.
Matazo's current contract at Monaco runs until June 2026, but it is not clear what the French team's plans are for the midfielder.
