MLS's best-paid

Like it does every year, the MLS has revealed the salaries of the best-paid players in the league. These are the ten top earners, according to the MLS Players Association salary guide.

1. Xherdan Shaqiri - $8.2 million

Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire) tops the list with an annual salary of 8.2 million dollars.

Liverpool and other big clubs

The Swiss national is currently playing for Chicago Fire, netting 7 goals in his first 38 games. Before ending up in the MLS, Shaqiri had built himself an impressive career in Europa, playing for the likes of Bayern Munich, Internazionale and Liverpool, amongst other clubs.

2. Lorenzo Insigne - $7.5 million

Runner-up is Lorenzo Insigne, earning 7.5 million dollars annually at Toronto FC.

Child of Napoli

Insigne signed for Toronto FC in the summer of 2022, after having played for Napoli almost the whole of his career. The winger won two Italian Cups with the club and also crowned himself European champion with Italy.

3. Javier Hernandez - $7.4 million

Javier Hernandez (LA Galaxy) takes third place, with an annual salary of $7.4 million.

Manchester United

The Mexican has been playing for the Galaxy since January 2020, after a successful career in Europe which started at Manchester United.

4. Federico Bernardeschi - $6.3 million

FC Toronto's Federico Bernardeschi just misses out on the podium, with 6.3 million annually.

Juventus

The left-footed Italian showed his class in Europe at Fiorentina, Crotone and Juventus, before signing for Toronto FC in July 2022.

5. Sebastian Driussi - $6 million

Sebastian Driussi (Austin FC) is in fifth place, taking away 6 million dollars annually.

Zenit

The Argentinian started his career at River Plate, before he went on to play for Russian side Zenit. In 2021, he was transferred to Austin FC, where he has scored 34 goals in 65 games.

6. Hector Herrera - $5.2 million

Houston Dynamo FC's Hector Herrera is sixth, with an annual salary of 5.2 million dollars.

Atlético Madrid

The now 33-year-old Mexican forced a break-through in his home country, where he was snapped up by FC Porto in 2013. After a second European spell, at Atlético Madrid, Herrera decided to go to the MLS, signing for Houston.

7. Douglas Costa - $4.5 million

Seventh in this list is Brazilian Douglas Costa, who takes away 4.5 million dollars annually.

Bayern

The Brazilian played for big clubs such as Bayern Munich and Juventus, before going back to his first club, Grêmio, on a loan spell. In July 2022, he was signed by the Galaxy on a deal until the end of this year.

8. Luiz Araujo - $4.5 million

Atlanta United's Luiz Araujo comes in at 4.5 million dollars annually.

OSC Lille

The Brazilian made a name for himself at São Paulo, where he forced a move to OSC Lille. He made more than 130 appearances for the French side, before signing for Atlanta in August 2021. His MLS adventure will end soon, though, as he already signed a contract for next season at Brazilian giant Flamengo.

9. Christian Benteke - $4.4 million

D.C. United's Christian Benteke takes ninth place in this list, with 4.4 million dollars annually.

Premier League

The Belgian made a name for himself in the Premier League, playing for Aston Villa, Liverpool and Crystal Palace. In August 2022, he was signed by D.C United, where his current deal expires at the end of next year.

10. Josef Martinez - $4.4 million

Josef Martinez is Inter Miami's highest-earning player with an annual salary of 4.4 million dollars.

Torino

The Venezuelan started his professional career at Caracas FC, where he was snatched up by Swiss Young Boys. After his spell in Switzerland, he tried his luck at Torino, making 76 appearances for the club. In March 2017, Martinez started his MLS adventure at Atlanta United, signing for Inter Miami in January 2023.
