Marco van Basten furious with Euro 2024 refereeing decision: "This is ridiculous!"

Marco van Basten was not happy about a decision at Euro 2024 during the match between Belgium and Romania.

The Dutch legend's displeasure had to do with Romelu Lukaku's disallowed goal. The Belgian striker scored after a brilliant pass from Kevin De Bruyne, but saw his goal disallowed by the VAR for offside.

"He was offside for half a millimetre, a toe," Van Basten told Dutch public broadcaster NOS. "Normally, a ball has to be completely over the line for a goal. So as a striker, you should also have to be completely behind the defender to be offside. That would be quite logical."

"Now the ball must be completely over the line, but the player does not have to be completely behind the defender. The first instance he is level with the defender, he is offside. That is, of course, ridiculous."

"This is a very defensive way of making a rule," the former Ballon d'Or winner continued. "People have been saying this for 20-30 years."

Van Basten then went on to criticize UEFA and FIFA. "They don't understand it, don't do it and don't want to. I'm not the only one, there are hundreds of people who have been saying this all the time."

It has not been Romelu Lukaku's tournament so far, with three disallowed goals for the Belgian striker in Germany by the VAR.

According to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, it is the first time in history that three goals by the same player have been disallowed in a major tournament.

However, despite not yet having officially scored at Euro 2024, Lukaku remains key for his country, providing an assist for Belgium's opening goal against Romania and creating several chances himself.
