It was a good idea, but...

Manchester City's Matheus Nunes thought that travelling to Madrid to party would be a good idea, assuming that nobody would recognise him. The problem? He was recognised and things got too complicated.

Madrid

The events occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, 8 September 2024, when the Portuguese Manchester City player was in Madrid with friends, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

La Riviera

The footballer was in the bathroom of the La Riviera nightclub, on Paseo Virgen del Puerto, when another person allegedly took a photo of him without his consent, something that the Portuguese player did not take too well.

Mobile phone

Nunes was accused of stealing the mobile phone of the person who had taken the photo, for which he was arrested and taken to the Arganzuela police station, for an alleged offence of theft.

Released on bail

A few hours later, however, the Portuguese midfielder was released on bail pending trial.

In the bathroom

According to the police report, Nunes allegedly snatched the 58-year-old complainant's mobile phone in the bathroom of the Sala La Riviera.

No persmission

Eyewitnesses told authorities that the alleged victim tried to take a photo of the City player in the bathroom, which he was not happy about and made him take the phone away, claiming the person had not asked permission to take the photo.

Or was it just a misunderstanding?

However, other versions suggest that it was all a misunderstanding, that the complainant bumped into the footballer and the latter thought that he had taken a photo of him because he was holding his mobile phone.

Shackled

According to El Mundo, when the police arrived, Nunes had the victim's mobile phone in his possession and was shackled, which he did not take in the best way, showing a defiant attitude towards the officers.

Awaiting trial

The Portuguese midfielder spent a few hours in the Arganzuela police station, until his lawyer was able to arrange his release. He is now awaiting trial.

No Premier League

It is worth noting that there was no Premier League matchday that weekend due to the international break, for which Matheus Nunes had not been called up for Portugal.
