Green jackets galore! Who are the most successful Masters players of all time?
The first major of the 2023 golf season is just around the corner, and as always, it's the one every golfer wants to win – The Masters.
Speaking of winners, let's look at the most successful players in The Masters' history!
It took Phil Mikelson 12 years on the PGA tour to win his first major championship, the 2004 Masters, beating Ernie Els by a single stroke.
After picking up his first Masters title in 2004, Mikelson went on to win the tournament in 2006 and 2010. Despite this and other major successes, the American has never been top of the world rankings.
Nick Faldo became the second player in the tournament's history to win The Masters in back-to-back years, in 1989 and 1990.
Faldo's third title in 1996 was one of the greatest comeback wins in the tournament's history, trailing Greg Norman by six strokes on the final day, then winning by five.
Regarded as a Masters and golfing icon, Gary Player won nine major championships as a player, including three Masters titles in 1961, 1974, and 1978.
Player created history with his first title back in 1961, becoming the first non-American to win the tournament.
Sam Snead won The Masters in 1949, 1952, and 1954. His first Masters' victory was the first year the green jacket was handed out.
Including seven majors with three Masters, Snead is a PGA tour icon, winning a now record-equalling 82 times on the tour, level with Tiger Woods.
Jimmy Demaret was the first player in the history of golf to win the tournament on three occasions, securing the title in 1940, 1947, and 1950.
Demaret enjoyed a successful career in the sport, winning 31 PGA events and later becoming a golf broadcaster in the 1960s.
Arnold Palmer became the first player in golf to win The Masters tournament on four separate occasions in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964. Over five years between 1960-1965, Palmer finished in the top two in four out of the five years.
Palmer won 62 PGA events and seven majors but is mostly known for his marketing genius, making millions from products rather than the golf course.
Arguably the greatest golfer ever but 100% the greatest golfer of this generation is Tiger Woods. The legendary player has won The Masters on five occasions: 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019.
Woods was the youngest to win the green jacket in 1997, aged 22, his 12-stroke victory in 1997 is the largest in the tournament's history, and his win in 2019 is seen as the greatest sporting comeback ever.
Jack Nicklaus is the most successful golfer to play at The Masters, winning a record-breaking six titles on the famous Augusta golf course.
Nicklaus won his first title in 1963 and his last in 1986, becoming the oldest player to win the tournament aged 46. The golfer has finished in the top two of the event ten times in his career.
