Apocalypse, now

Turkey and Georgia played out one of the best matches of Euro 2024 so far, with the Turks eventually running out 3–1 winners. The game included wondergoals, an almost biblical storm, and unfortunately, fan violence.

Ugly scenes

Footage shows fans from both sides clashing before the game even kicked off at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, with huge numbers gathering in what became a violent clash.

Objects thrown

Per Yahoo Sports, both sets of fans were involved and were seen throwing cups and other objects at each other.

Police presence

Yahoo Sports continues with their report, explaining local police were quick to clear the area and create a barrier between the sides.

Overflowing passion

Turkish fans are known for being some of the most passionate in world football, and with a Turkish population of around 2.9 million in Germany, they were well represented in Dortmund. Unfortunately, some were willing to take things too far.

Tournament debut

Euro 2024 marks the first time Georgia have qualified for a major tournament, per The Express. Despite the off-field issues, their players represented themselves well and could have easily snatched at least a point from the game.

Restoring the peace

The Express also reports, that whilst some fans were involved in the violence, many attempted to resolve the situation by playing peacemaker.

Breaches

The violence was not the only breach of the norm we saw during the game, with heavy rainfall causing the Westfalenstadion stadium roof to leak, drenching the unfortunate fans stuck below.

Hard work

Stadium workers were seen desperately attempting to clear the area below the leak to ensure the game could continue.

Hopefully not a trend

Whilst most fans have been so far able to enjoy what is becoming an excellent tournament, these clashes were not the first we have seen. Sunday’s fixture between England and Serbia was preceded by violent fan clashes, with chairs, bottles, and even tables thrown.
