It’s back

College football has technically already started following Georgia Tech’s upset win over Florida State in Dublin, Ireland last weekend. Now, though, things start to heat up with kick-off weekend coming up with National Championship contenders hoping to get their seasons off to a winning start. Let’s take a look at who they may be.

Georgia

Per The New York Post, UGA has the best odds to win the National Championship, which would make it three titles in four years. They have a loaded roster, headlined by Carson Beck at QB and Mykel Williams at defensive end.

What’s stopping them?

The Bulldogs are scheduled to take on three of the preseason top-6 teams in the nation, taking on Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss in what has become their most difficult schedule in years. They also kick off the season against number 14 Clemson in what could be a litmus test. Still, with the expanded playoffs in place, they should be well set up to make a run for another Natty.

Ohio State

Ohio State will be desperate to win another National Championship after seeing bitter rivals Michigan winning it all last season. Now, with an absolutely stacked team, including transfer Will Howard under-center, the Buckeyes are well positioned to win it all, they’re going to need to beat Michigan first, however…

What’s stopping them?

It could easily be a loss deep in the new 12-team playoffs that undo the Buckeyes this year, there really aren’t too many stumbling blocks for them to overcome, otherwise. As Eddie Timanus writes for USA Today, “they’ll do enough to reach the Big Ten finale, win it to secure a top-two seed, and prevail in a classic championship game,” it’s not a bad prediction.

Alabama

We know Bama isn’t the three-seed, nor are they third favorites to win the National Championship per the oddsmakers, however, they are, once again, loaded with talent. Jalen Milroe is amongst the favorites to win the Heisman in 2024, and if he does, we could see the Tide winning it all under new head coach Kalen DeBoer.

What’s stopping them?

Much like UGA, Bama has a difficult schedule ahead of them, one they should be able to comfortably deal with, but if they slip up once or twice, they could find themselves in a difficult spot come playoff time. Sportsbooks also have them tied with Ole Miss as fifth-favourite to win a Natty, per the NY Post, and that’s just too far for us.

Oregon

Jordan Mendoza for USA Today writes, “The “O” logo will no longer represent how many national titles have been won in Eugene,” and we get it. They secured the services of Dillon Gabriel from Oklahoma via transfer which was a huge get, and Dan Lanning is one of the hottest names in coaching, we could see the Ducks getting it done.

What’s stopping them?

Is it too reductive to say, “it’s Oregon,”? That feels too harsh, and in today’s climate of transfers and conference restructuring, the Ducks could become a genuine powerhouse, we just aren’t sure they have enough elite talent to beat the likes of UGA and OSU this season.

Texas

Texas is fourth-favorite to win the National Championship and has Quinn Ewers at QB who is third-favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, you would think that’s enough to have us seriously considering them as contenders, and we do, I guess, but do we really think they beat UGA or OSU?

What’s stopping them?

As we mentioned previously, this is a good football team, and one that will comfortably make the playoffs, probably with a first-round bye, but beyond that, do we see them beating the best teams in the country? They’re now in the SEC, which will also increase the level of regular season opponents, increasing the intensity of every game.

Our prediction

Our dream National Championship game is UGA vs OSU as we believe they’re the two best teams, with the best rosters, and best coaching in the country. If it is Bulldogs vs Buckeyes for all the marbles, we’re going to be looking out for a huge machine in red and black, sorry Buckeye fans, it’s going to be another year of misery in 2024.
