The 2023/24 football season was another interesting year for football, with new stars emerging and making a name for themselves. On the other hand, some players disappointed and failed to deliver. Here are the ten biggest failures of the 2023/24 football season.

Every year it's the same old story: Joao Felix joins a new club, makes an excellent start to the season, and then slowly fades away. This season was no exception.

He may have impressed at the start of the season with fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo, but by mid-season both men had dropped off, to the point where Felix was no longer part of Xavi's plans. Despite his undeniable talent and flashes of genius, the winger remains highly inconsistent, and it is not certain he will stay with Barça.

A key figure in Manchester City's Champions League triumph last year, Jack Grealish was initially part of Pep Guardiola's plans at the start of the season, but things may have changed. While his team-mate Phil Foden has excelled, Jack Grealish has not. The Englishman has been a shadow of his former self this season with the Skyblues, scoring just three Premier League goals, according to Sofascore.

Dropped to the bench in the Premier League, the former Aston Villa player has failed to impress in the Champions League, despite making eight starts. Grealish has alternated between highs and lows, and has yet to justify his €117.5 million transfer fee, according to Transfermarkt.

It's time to talk about Chelsea. The world's biggest spenders in 2023, the Blues have had a disappointing season, finishing sixth in the Premier League. While some bets paid off (Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto), others failed, such as Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Signed by Chelsea for €70 million in January 2023, the Ukrainian has struggled to establish himself in London. Despite some technical prowess and five goals in the PL this season, according to Transfermarkt, the winger is not at the level expected and has to compete with the likes of Gallagher, Sterling and Madueke.

Bayern are facing their first trophy-less season since 2011/12, and Dayot Upamecano is partly to blame. Struggling in the league, the Frenchman lost his starting berth this season to Kim Min-Jae, who wasn't very convincing either.

Upamecano's season took a decisive turn on 18 February. Having already been sent off in the 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the Champions League on 14 February, the defender received a second red card four days later in Bochum. The Bavarians lost 3-2 and the title, and Upamecano was relegated to the bench for the rest of the season.

When will Ansu Fati be at his best level again? A scintillating performer with Barcelona in 2021 and 2022, the Spaniard has struggled to get back to his best. After suffering a serious injury in 2023, the winger has been loaned out to Brighton this season to regain playing time and confidence.

Unfortunately, Fati's time in the Premier League has proved a nightmare. With just three Premier League starts to his name, the 21-year-old striker has failed to fit into De Zerbi's plans this season. Injured for two months, Fati again suffered from a lack of fitness and is hoping for a fully fit 2024/25.

Arsenal may have had another great season, but they lacked one thing if they were to win the Premier League: a finisher. With the signing of Gabriel Jesus, the Gunners thought they had found their centre-forward, but things turned out differently.

With just four Premier League goals this season (Transfermarkt), the Brazilian epitomises Arsenal's lack of effectiveness. The Gunners need to find a great number 9 if Jesus does not step up.

Yes, he's still at Manchester United. Signed for €64.2 million by United in 2023 (Transfermarkt), Mason Mount spent an anonymous season at Old Trafford, making just five Premier League starts and scoring one goal.

PSG paid €95 million for the services of Kolo Muani this summer, per Transfermarkt, with the French striker showing great promise. However, he quickly fell out of favour in the French capital, losing his place to Gonçalo Ramos at the end of the season.

With six goals and five assists in Ligue 1 (Transfermarkt), his record is not disastrous either, but more was expected from the striker, especially with PSG doing well this season. At 25, however, Kolo Muani is still young and has been called up by Didier Deschamps for the Euros.

And the award for the biggest flop of the season goes to ..... Antony. The Manchester United winger has been more talked about on social networks than on football pitches this season. Mocked for his wasteful gestures, his inefficiency and his behaviour, the Brazilian has failed this season.

With just one goal and one assist in 29 Premier League appearances, according to Transfermarkt, Antony is the symbol of the Red Devils' poor season in the league. Signed by United for €95 million in August 2022, the winger's market value has plummeted to €28 million, according to Transfermarkt. A flop on and off the pitch, Antony is also one of the Premier League's most unpopular players.
