10 things you probably didn't know about Patrick Mahomes ahead of the Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are on the cusp of something momentous. With their place at Super Bowl LIX secured, Mahomes is looking to lead his team to their third consecutive Super Bowl win – a feat no other team in the history of the sport has ever accomplished.

Patrick Mahomes' legacy as an NFL great is already secured. Three Super Bowl rings so far and some of the greatest seasons we have ever seen. Mahomes' career has been fascinating to watch, so you may think you know all there is to know about the Chiefs quarterback, well here are a few things that may have passed you by!

It's not uncommon for NFL players to get involved with ownership of franchises in different sports, as Mahomes is a co-owner of MLB's Kansas City Royals and MLS' Sporting KC. However, he has a unique claim to fame as a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, a recently formed women's soccer team.

His wife Brittany is a founding co-owner of the Current, and a former college soccer player herself. Patrick Mahomes said in a statement, "Brittany and the Longs (Angie and Chris) have done an incredible job building a world-class organization. I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history.

Pre-game fits have become all the rage on social media and on sports television coverage. The Chiefs prolific passer has a routine of what he prefers to wear before the action kicks off. He told the Daily Mail, "If it's a home game, I usually wear some casual clothes."

Of course, that begs the question of what Mahomes does when the Chiefs aren't playing in Kansas City. "If it's an away game, I'll throw on the suit and show out a little bit."

It might be hard to believe that one of the most popular athletes in the world can't stay away from a condiment. Mark captured Mahomes saying, "When I was a little kid, I used to just eat ketchup sandwiches that were just ketchup and bread." He says that he still eats ketchup often this day.

Kansas City Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt told the team website that he and the quarterback bonded over their love of ketchup. "I told Mahomes after I heard about his love of ketchup that I've always been the same way. I love ketchup, and definitely, any time I have a steak, I'm going to have it with ketchup." The Hunt ownership group is not related to the group that owns Hunt's ketchup.

Perhaps it was destiny for Patrick Mahomes to play professional sports. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was an MLB pitcher for 11 seasons. He spent the majority of his career playing for the Minnesota Twins. As a result, the future Chiefs quarterback was often in the locker room and on the baseball field from day one.

Mahomes Sr. told Lubbock Online that his son would shag flyballs at the age of six for his New York Mets teammates during the World Series. The coaches did not want to let a small child do this, but Mahomes Sr. was not concerned. "As I was saying it, Robin Ventura hit a ball out to left-center... It was the first time he caught a fly ball off a big leaguer's bat."

Mahomes played his college football at Texas Tech University, which is located in Lubbock, Texas. He told ESPN in 2016 that his favorite dishes were served at an establishment named Spanky's.

"I can't eat the fried food a lot but it's definitely good. The cheese sticks they have are pretty legendary." The Kansas City Star once described Spanky's as a "beloved hole in the wall."

Away from the football field, Mahomes had dad duties like many men who might be reading this gallery. He has a son named Patrick Mahomes III and a daughter named Sterling Skye. His wife Brittany is pregnant with their third child, and she shared in December 2024 that her husband is an exemplary hair stylist.

Brittany Mahomes posted that the quarterback was "crushing his braiding skills" as she showed a video of him braiding his daughter's hair in December 2024. According to People, Mahomes was not as savvy removing the clear rubber bands in his wife's hair, which she also took to social media to share with the world.

It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Mahomes' favorite flick is a classic football movie.

He told Lubbock Online, "Honestly, it's 'Remember the Titans'. I have loved that movie since I was a baby. When it came out and I have watched it so many times. I watched it the other week."

Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas, and lived in the state until he made it to the NFL. He became a huge fan of the Cowboys, as he told AOL.

Mahomes told AOL, "I was a huge Dez Bryant fan. He's from East Texas, my area. He's from Lufkin, Texas, so I got to see him play in high school. And then I got to see him play at Oklahoma State and then with the Cowboys, so I was always rooting him on for sure."

Patrick Mahomes has stayed free and clear of controversy despite his high profile, but he did walk down a slippery slope one time. NFL players are not allowed to endorse beer products, and Mahomes once appeared in a commercial for Coors Light.

Instead of talking about beverages, Mahomes spoke about his friend "The Coors Light Bear", which he described with adjectives that would also fit a beer. He also appeared in a spot for the brand where he promoted a flashlight called "The Coors Light."

When Pat Mahomes Sr. played for the Texas Rangers in 2001, the future NFL quarterback got to spend time with MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez told Fox News that he told Mahomes at the time, "'Don't play football. The money's in baseball.'" Rodriguez then said, "I'm happy to be wrong and glad he didn't listen!"

Patrick Mahomes was actually selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2014 MLB Draft in the 37th round , but we know where his heart truly was.
