Canadian artist Alanis Morissette was born in the nation’s capital, Ottawa, on June 1, 1974. The singer parents’ were teachers in a military school and raised Alanis and her two brothers between Lahr, Germany, and Ottawa, Ontario, due to their profession.

When Morissette was six, the family returned to live in Ottawa, where the youngster showed an interest in piano and dance. Alanis was raised in a Catholic family and attended Catholic schools growing up. Here we see a young Alanis with her grandmother.

The performer’s parents encouraged her interest in the performing arts, and when Alanis was in junior high, she landed a role on the show ‘You Can’t Do That on Television.’
At the beginning of the 1990s, Alanis’ singing career began with the release of two albums in the Canadian market. Her debut was a dance-pop album released in 1991, called ‘Alanis.’ Morissette co-wrote all the songs, and the album went platinum. Her second album, released in 1992 and called ‘Now is the Time,’ was more ballad-driven and didn’t sell nearly as well.

It was in 1993 when Morissette was introduced to manager Scott Welch, that Alanis' life would really change. Scott loved Alanis' voice, personality, and talent for writing lyrics. It was decided that once Alanis finished high school, she should move to Toronto to further develop her music.

In Toronto, Morissette met Glen Ballard (pictured), who helped Alanis write what would be her first internationally released album, 'Jagged Little Pill.'
Following a recording deal in the spring of '95, the young performer moved to Los Angeles. That same year, she released her ground-breaking album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ that shot Morissette into international star status. The album has become a cult classic and sold over 33 million copies worldwide.
Following ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ the singer-songwriter shot into fame and toured the world. She also continued to release new albums and even produced one of them, ‘Under Rug Swept.’
Since 'Jagged Little Pill' Alanis has been making music non-stop. She has won 7 Grammy and 13 Juno Awards for her music. Her most recent album released in 2017 is called ‘Such Pretty Forks in the Road.’
In 1999 Alanis played the role of God in Kevin Smith's comedic film 'Dogma.' Morissette also wrote a song for the movie's soundtrack.
Alanis enjoys acting and has appeared on 'Sex and the City,' 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' and eight episodes of the hit show 'Weeds.' She also appeared in the Off-Broadway play 'The Exonerated.'
In recent years Alanis has dedicated a lot of time towards her recovery from mental health issues. As a part of her journey to self-discovery and healing, she began a podcast. On her website alanis.com, you can listen to interviews she conducts with experts on a wide array of subjects regarding well-being and personal development.
The star suffered from eating disorders as a teenager and went into therapy to work through her issues. She has also had to deal with anxiety and depression and, more recently, postpartum depression.
These challenges may have led to her interest in Buddhism. She has met the Dalai Lama on more than one occasion. Here we see Alanis performing in Ottawa, Canada before a speech that was given by the Dalai Lama in 2004.
Morissette is also a big supporter of Elaine Aron, the author of the book ‘The Highly Sensitive Person.’ She participated in the documentary released on the subject.
The artist considers herself a highly sensitive person and attributes her sensitivity as the cause of many of the challenges she has faced in life.
In May of 2010, Alanis married her current husband, rapper Mario’ Souleye’ Treadway, with whom she lives in Los Angeles.
Alanis and Souleye have three beautiful children together: Ever, Winter, and Onyx.
The experience of being a mother has provoked Morissette to explore gentle parenting and become an advocate for breastfeeding.

In the fall of 2020, a book about the musical ‘Jagged Little Pill: You Live, You Learn’ was released. The book takes a behind the scenes look at the musical, following its journey to Broadway.
It includes stories and photos from Alanis Morissette, Diablo Cody, and the show’s cast. ‘Jagged Little Pill’ also investigates the significance of the original album in the context of the 90s and Alanis’ influences when writing the album.
The ‘Jagged Little Pill’ musical is the story of a family trying to deal with the difficult issues that affect the world today. The musical is inspired by the emotions and themes that are explored in the songs Alanis wrote for her Grammy-winning album, such as: ‘You Oughta Know’, ‘Perfect’, ‘Ironic’, and ‘Hand in My Pocket’. It earned 15 Tony nominations in 2020, including 'Best Musical.'
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 'Jagged Little Pill' album, Alanis began her world tour in the summer of 2021. Alanis shared on her Instagram account that she was THRILLED to be back performing live on stage again, especially after so many months of downtime due to the pandemic.
Alanis undertook a new endeavor in 2021 - being a judge on Fox's new television show 'Alter Ego.' Together with other famous performers such as Nick Lachey, Grimes, and Will. I. Am., she evaluated singers who appeared in avatar format. Unfortunately, the show lasted only one season.
In June of 2022, Alanis released a new album 'The storm before the calm.' The singer says this a meditation record.

Over the summer of 2022 Alanis began her world tour to celebrate 25 years of 'Jagged Little Pill.' Fans were thrilled to rock out with Alanis in person after 2 years of pandemic restrictions.
