Taylor Swift did it again: 'Red' is a big hit

Taylor Swift is on an eternal roll. She just released her own, 'Taylor's version' of the album 'Red,' after she had already dominated the music industry in 2020 with two albums: 'Folklore' and 'Evermore.' In the UK, 'Red' became the eighth consecutive number one album for Taylor Swift.

It's raining awards

Swift also won a series of awards, including 'Top Female Artist' at the 2021 Billboard Awards and the prestigious Global Icon Prize at the BRIT Awards.

Taylor Swift at the 2021 Brit Awards

When accepting the prestigious Global Icon award at the 2021 BRIT gala, Taylor Swift held a moving speech reaching out to young artists and especially to women. "If you face criticism and resistance," she said, "you're probably doing something new." And "if you feel turbulence, it must mean you're rising. Never stop believing in yourself."

Taylor Swift, then and now

Where does Taylor Swift come from? How did she develop her music, and how did she become the feminist pop star she is today?

Taylor Swift's childhood in Pennsylvania

It all started in the bosom of a wealthy family from Pennsylvania. Taylor Swift was born in 1989 in Reading, PA. Her father was a financial advisor at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and her mother was a mutual fund executive.

Inspired by Shania Twain

Taylor Swift attended public schools. As a child she took drama and singing classes, and as a teenager she was inspired and motivated by Shania Twain to start an artistic career.

The Christmas Tree Girl

Taylor Swift had a trouble-free childhood, and curiously... they say she lived on a Christmas tree farm! Urban legend or reality, the fact is that (within that idyllic environment) Taylor Swift threw herself into music and immediately achieved success.

Her first album

The singer's first album was entitled 'Taylor Swift'. Released in 2006, it was basically a collection of love songs with country inspiration. It had moderate success.

The record that launched Taylor to stardom

In 2008, 'Fearless' catapulted Taylor Swift into stardom. The album sold 700,000 copies in its first week.

Taylor Swift acting in her videos

Taylor Swift won the 2009 MTV award for best video clip featuring a female lead. And that female lead was... her.

Valentine's Day

Taylor Swift's first foray into the world of cinema came with the film 'Valentine's Day' in 2009. Other roles would follow in films such as 'The Giver' and 'Cats'. In general, however, Taylor is more of a singer than an actress.

Taylor Swift's boyfriends

Taylor Swift has dated a lot of famous colleagues: Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, Calvin Harris, Tom Hiddleston...

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn

In 2016 she began a relationship with model and actor Joe Alwyn. According to various media, they are still together and stronger than ever.

Taylor Swift's country past

Taylor Swift started in the country universe. Step by step, she became a mainstream pop singer. Yet, she has not forgotten about her roots. The singer performed one of her new songs at the 2020 American Country Music awards. In addition, she has often (respectfully) parodied her country origins on TV. It's a fundamental genre of U.S. music culture.

Taylor Swift: From 'Shake it Off' to 'Folklore'

For most of us, Taylor Swift is an icon of pop. Her song 'Shake it Off' was a leap towards a massive and global audience. 'Folklore' was closer to indie than pop, though. Some critics said the album reminded them of Lana del Rey.

Top earner in the music industry

Taylor Swift is one of the best earners in American music. Forbes values the business she generates at $63.5 million.

Different Taylor Swift looks

The singer has transformed from an innocent-looking young girl to a confident, stylish woman. She was initially known as a girl-next-door with blonde curls. Her looks were a little more conservative than those of the present.

Makeup and straightened hair

Over time she's begun to use make-up and clothing of brighter colors to create a fiercer look. Nowadays, she often straightens her curly hair.

Red lipstick

The bright red colour on her lips is a sign of the identity that she has been building for herself.

Ties with Tennessee

Taylor Swift has a mansion in Beverly Hills but also several properties in Tennessee. She's lived in the region of country music for many years.

Taylor Swift's political ideology

Taylor Swift used to be more discreet about her political views. She celebrated the arrival of Barack Obama as president but was never bothered by the fact that one of her admirers was the conservative George W. Bush.

Against Trump: "We'll throw you out"

She has made an exception for Trump, though. Swift addressed him directly in the context of the George Floyd case and the nationwide protests against police violence: "We'll throw you out in November."

Miss Americana

In 2020, Netflix released a documentary about Taylor Swift. 'Miss Americana' was an intimate and personal portrait of the singer that addressed sexism in the music industry and the misogynistic comments Swift endured herself.

What's next for Taylor Swift?

Through the years, Taylor Swift has gone through several artistic and stylish innovations. Yet, the global star has always continued to be herself. What will be her next step?
