What happens if you have a Huawei smartphone?

The trade conflict between the United States and China has affected Huawei. President Donald Trump has suggested that Chinese technology poses a threat to national security. And U.S. companies have been called upon not to work for Chinese companies. This affects Huawei, whose smartphones have always been heavily linked to the American company Google.

Can Huawei survive without Google?

In this climate of tension, Google may decide to stop working with Huawei. Will users of the Asian brand's smartphones be able to access Google services included in Android?

No Google apps on Huawei

After months of uncertainty, the Chinese brand has decided to make a first move by presenting its new smartphone models, all of them high-end, without the apps of Google.

Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro

The Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro confirm the divorce between Google and Huawei. They do not have apps such as Gmail, YouTube, WhatsApp or the Google Play Store as part of their preinstalled services.

No Google Play on Huawei

But does that mean that you won't be able to download these apps on the new Huawei mobiles? According to Richard Yu, CEO of the Chinese brand's consumer businesses, Google's services can be downloaded one by one from application stores other than Google Play.

Huawei Nova 5T

At the moment, the last model of Huawei that does have Android along with Google services is the Nova 5T. Launched in mid 2019, this high-end terminal (with mid-range price, by the way) has managed to "dodge" the conflict between Huawei and Google.

What the experts say about it

However, according to experts' reviews of the Huawei Nova 5T, this model does not come with the latest version of Android.

Huawei Mobile Services

And what happens if my smartphone is newer than the Huawei Nova 5T? What can I do to continue relying on Google apps? For these cases, the Asian firm has created an operating system called Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).

Huawei's own shop: App Gallery

Will it allow Google services on a Huawei mobile? Yes. Users will not have these applications when they turn on their new terminals, nor will they have Google Play, but they will have the Huawei App Gallery.

What's up with WhatsApp?

Although the most popular applications will be found in this App Gallery, others, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Netflix, and HBO, will not be available. How to solve this problem? You will need to download them and install them from their official websites.

Everything could change

However, all of this could change at any time, since the trade conflict could change on any day. In October 2019, it was reported that the United States might lift its "veto" on Huawei.

What The New York Times says

"The Trump administration plans to begin issuing licenses allowing some U.S. companies to supply non-sensitive goods to Huawei," journalist Ana Swanson reported in The New York Times in early October 2019.

"Calming the trade tensions"

"This will help defuse trade tensions," she added. However, this move may not mean (yet) that new Huawei devices can use Google apps.

The opinion of an expert: Jaime Gonzalo

"In China, where Google doesn't operate, Huawei mobiles work with App Gallery and HMS," says Jaime Gonzalo, vice president of Huawei Mobile Services for Europe, in a statement to the site elconfidencial.com.

Other applications through the App Gallery

"Amazon and Fortnite are in the App Gallery and work perfectly," the head of Huawei Europe says. "In the case of WhatsApp, the only party that has been officially confirmed is Google, and not Facebook."

How many Huawei mobiles are being sold?

And what is happening with the consumers, do they still want to buy Huawei phones after all the bad news? According to Gartner's global mobile phone market survey in August 2019, the answer is yes... and more and more.

More sales in 2019

According to the survey, Huawei has achieved a global market share of 15.8%, increasing during the second quarter of 2019 due to the global sales of its smartphones.

Silver Medal

According to data published by Gartner, Huawei ranks second worldwide in terms of sales. It sold 58.1 million mobile phones between April and June 2019.

And what about the old Huawei phones?

For those who already have a Huawei smartphone, there is also uncertainty. What will happen to them? Will it be possible to continue updating these phones? Yes and no, say the experts. It depends on how the trade block proceeds.

Trade issues may affect Android updates

If the (definitive) rupture between Huawei and Google materializes, the Chinese brand's mobile phones will no longer receive Android updates. In other words, all of them will keep an old version of the system. This could affect the performance of our smartphones.

Future still uncertain

We will have to pay attention to what happens. The future of Huawei's smartphones will largely depend on trade relations between China and the United States.
