Asia's impact on the world is more profound than ever. Its population is ten times as big as Europe's and twelve times North America's. Soon there will be more Asians than all other people of the world combined.

The most beautiful women are often from Asia. This is Miss Universe 2018, the Filipina Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray.

The Future is Asian

International Relations specialist Parag Khanna has written a book about the influence of Asia in the world. "The Future is Asian," it says. The world order will from now on be led by Asian people.

Khanna speaks of the 'Asianization' of the world. "Asians once again see themselves as the center of the world - and its future,” he says.

Kuala Lumpur

In 2018, the fastest growing economies in the world were India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan, according to Khanna. Cities like Kuala Lumpur, home to the iconic Petronas Twin towers, will be recognized ever more as the metropoles of the world.

According to the World Bank, Singapore is the best place in the world to do business.

India's richest family

India has one of the world's biggest economies and the wealthiest people. This man, Mukesh Ambani, heads an oil refinery company and is the richest person in India. With a net worth is $50 billion, /Time /has named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. 

Huawei

Giant Asian companies include Huawei which leads the global market in telecom equipment and 5G mobile communication. Huawei makes more than $100 billion per year. Only Samsung, another Asian powerhouse, sells more mobile phones in the world.

The Huawei dynasty

Huawei was founded by former Chinese military officer Ren Zhengfei. His family is now among the wealthiest in the world. Ren's youngest daughter, Annabel Yao, is a glamorous presence in Paris and New York's high society.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a central place in the world, both economically and culturally. Together with South Korea and Taiwan, it is an Asian tiger in terms of economic growth. 

Hong Kong protests

In 1997, Hong Kong went from British to Chinese rule. Since then, its netizens have protested the dominance of the Chinese mainland in their daily affairs. In the summer of 2019, the world watched in awe as millions took to the streets to protest an intrusive extradition bill from China. 

Xi Jinping

Xi Jinping is the president of the People's Republic of China. He is leading the country with the largest population in the world and a considerable military force. His term as a communist leader can be renewed indefinitely. In 2017, /The Economist/ called him "The World's Most Powerful Man."

Chinese-American trade war

Being such a powerful economy, China can play a tough game when it comes to trade negotiations with partners like the United States. Trump and Jinping are engaged in a duel of tariffs on each others' products, throwing the entire world economy off balance. 

Alibaba

One of the biggest companies in the world is the Chinese online store Alibaba. Since its beginnings in 1999 it grew exponentially because of its great base of Chinese customers. By now, people across the world order clothing, gadgets, and many other things from the store. 

Alibaba: Jack Ma

The founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma, is one of the richest men in Asia and the world. His net worth is estimated at $41 billion. In 2019, Ma is leaving Alibaba. He intends to spend his fortune on philanthropic projects in education. 

Asian models' global fame

It's not just tech innovators that make millions in the global market. Asian models and actresses, too, put the continent on the map with their appearances on famous catwalks, TV shows, and magazines. This /Vogue/ cover features South Korean actress Doona Bae and Indian actress Deepika Padukone alongside their American colleague Scarlett Johansson

Angelababy has risen to global stardom with movies like 'Independence Day: Resurgence' and modelling contracts for brands like Dior. In /Forbes/'s China Celebrity 100, she ranked eighth in 2017 and fourteenth in 2019. 

Bitcoin

A literal money maker from Asia is Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym for the developer(s) of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. When introduced in 2008, the digital token was worth next to nothing. A few booms later, however, it hit the record height of $19,783 in December of 2017. Bitcoin has not been able to return to that level since. 

Toyota

This Japanese car manufacturer has a 15% market share in the American auto industry. It is the most valuable automotive brand in the world. 

Sony

Another killer brand from Asia. In the 1980s and 1990s, the electronics company started specializing in music and games. Its PlayStation is now among the most popular gaming consoles in the world. 

Anime

Pokémon is a worldwide representative of anime, the Japanese film and television animation that has fans across the globe. Pikachu is a household name.

Asian cinema

Asian cinema is an important contender for box office booms and movie awards. 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (2000), directed by Ang Lee, kicked off the century with a bang. It won four Oscars, among which was the prize for best non-English film. 

Michelle Yeoh

Malay actress Michelle Yeoh was one of the stars in 'Crouching Tiger.' She is also known for the James Bond film 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and the series 'Star Trek: Discovery'.  

Bollywood

Bollywood films, indulging in Indian dance and music, have made their mark in world cinema. Actress Priyanka Chopra honored its style during one of her wedding ceremonies in India.

Bollywood music and dance is captivating. Many try to emulate or at least relish it, like Michelle Obama in this Bollywood dancing clinic.

Malay royalty

Asia is home to the wealthiest and most colourful monarchies in the world. Sultan Abdullah ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, King of Malaysia, assumed the throne in 2019. The lineage of the sultans goes back to the fifteenth century. 

Japanese dynasty

The Yamoto-dynasty of Japan is even more ancient: it dates from around 660 BC. In 2019, Emperor Naruhito (left) took over the reign from his father Akihito. 

Princesses Mako and Kako

The goings-on of crown prince Fumihito's daughters, Mako and Kako, are always followed by fans of the monarchy. They are no heiresses to the throne... their little brother Hisahito is. 

Shinzō Abe

Japan has a modern leader in Shinzō Abe. He has good ties with China and the United States, while he takes a hard stance against North Korea.

Kim Jong-un

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is also referred to as the Supreme Leader and Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea. He was born in January of 1983.

The North Korean nuclear arms program is a concern for the world. Kim and U.S. president Donald Trump are negotiating an arms reduction treaty, but its progress is haphazard.

Gangnam Style

Meanwhile, south of the border another dance is happening. With the global hit 'Gangnam Style,' rapper Psy introduced Korean Pop to the world.  

K-Pop

K-Pop bands, like the girls' group Twice, have sprung up to dominate global teen culture in the twenty-first century. 

BTS

A big K-Pop phenomenon is the boys' group BTS. They perform worldwide, record movies, and win global awards. Some people call them the twenty-first-century Beatles. 

Samsung

But there's more coming from South Korea. Since 2012, Samsung has been the largest manufacturer of cell phones in the world. It is one of the biggest tech companies in the world, together with giants like Apple and Facebook.

Innovative young Asians

New generations of Asian innovators are ready to rock the world with their arts, technology, and entrepreneurship. 

Liu Wen

Among them is the Chinese top model Liu Wen. Born into a working-class family in Yongzhou, Hunan, she now lives in Manhattan and has an estimated net worth of $40 million.

Asian supermodels

She is surrounded by Asian supermodels conquering the fashion industry. Together with Liu Wen we see Ming Xi, Sui He, and Estelle Chen, taking a break from a Victoria's Secret fashion show. 

Aung Sang Suu Kyi

Powerful Asian women come in all shapes and sizes. This Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung Sang Suu Kyi, spent decades to promote democracy in the country of Myanmar. Having been prosecuted and imprisoned by the nation's junta, she now holds the position of State Counsellor of Myanmar.

Since 2017, controversy has surrounded Aug Sang Suu Kyi. The army of Myanmar is persecuting the Islamic ethnic group of the Rohingya, and critics claim Aug Sang Suu Kyi is not working hard enough to stop it.

Narendra Modi

Another upset in the region was the election of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister of India in 2014. His rule is controversial, with profound economic and military reforms, and his nationalism affects the peoples surrounding his own.  

Imran Khan

Pakistan's leader Imran Khan and Modi have been on the verge of war for years. The boundary region of Kashmir is a source of dispute. Both countries have nuclear arms, and this makes the local conflict all the more unnerving for the continent as a whole. 

Asians towering in global entertainment

Culturally, the Asian continent is represented across the world by international athletes and entertainers. Some of them are Asian-born, others have parents who migrated from Asian countries to the west.  

Hiro Murai

Hiro Murai is a Japanese-born filmmaker who created the comedy series 'Atlanta' and videos for famous artists like David Guetta and The Shins. His video for Childish Gambino's 'This is America' won him a Grammy and an MTV Video Music Award in 2018.

Marie Kondo

'Tidying Up with Marie Kondo' (Netflix, 2019) changed people's households across the world. An expert in organizing and minimizing clutter in the house, the Japanese author tells us to ask ourselves for each of our belongings: "Does it spark me joy?" If the answer is no, get rid of it.

Godfrey Gao

Godfrey Gao was labelled 'the world's first Asian supermodel' after he signed with Louis Vuitton in 2011. He is Taiwanese-Canadian.

Jeremy Lin

NBA Basketball Player Jeremy Shu-How Lin caused a wave of 'Linsanity' in the United States when he began scoring points for the New York Knicks in 2012. His parents immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan.

Crazy Rich Asians

The movie 'Crazy Rich Asians' (2018) put actors of Asian descent on the Hollywood map.

Constance wu

One of the 'Crazy Rich Asians' is Constance Tian Min Wu. Her parents are Taiwanese immigrants. The actress broke through with "Fresh off the boat," a comedy series about the life of an immigrating Taiwanese family. In 2017, /Time/ listed her as one of the 100 most influential persons in the world.  

Henry Golding

British-Malaysian actor, model, and TV host Henry Golding also starred in 'Crazy Rich Asians.' He has presented The Travel Show on the BBC since 2014.

Awkwafina

Actress, rapper, and comedian Awkwafina is another 'Crazy Rich Asian.' Her birth name is Nora Lum. Her mother immigrated to the U.S. from Korea and her father is of Chinese descent. You may also know Awkwafina as one of the 'Ocean's 8' (2018).

Harry Shum jr.

Harry Shum Jr. was born in Costa Rica to Chinese parents. Besides acting in films like 'Crazy Rich Asians' and series like 'Glee,' he is also an excellent dancer. His skills brought him on tours with Mariah Carey and Beyonce, so you could say he is a big deal. 

Gemma Chan

Gemma Chan is a British model and actress whose parents are from Hong Kong and China. She starred in 'Crazy Rich Asians' and also appeared in 'Captain Marvel' (2019) and 'Transformers' (2017).

The fourth female star of 'Crazy Rich Asians' is Malay actress Michelle Yeoh (on the right). A sequel to the film is in the making.

Ichiro Suzuki

Ichiro Suzuki is an MLB Baseball Player who made it to All Star status ten times. His career had begun in Japan with the Orix Blue Waves. After moving to the U.S., he set a record of the most hits in a year (262) with the Seattle Mariners in 2004. A highly succesful and awarded player, he retired in 2019. 

Hasan Minaj

Comedian Hasan Minhaj was born into a family of Indian migrants in the United States. He is known for the Netflix special 'Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.' In 2019, /Time/ considered him one of the 100 most influential persons in the world. 

Yao Ming

The Chinese basketball player Yao Ming is no less than 2,29 metres (7ft 6in) tall. He was an NBA star with the Houston Rockets from 2002 to 2011.

Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka ruled the tennis world in 2019 with her first place in the Women's Singles Rank. She has won the Australian and U.S. Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon. Osaka is half Haitian, half Japanese. She was born in Osaka, Japan.

James Wan

James Wan is an Australian filmmaker of Malaysian-Chinese descent. He is known for the 'Saw' franchise and 'Aquaman.'

Indra Nooyi

Ranked among the world's most powerful women, Indra Nooyi headed the Pepsi Company from 2006 to 2018. Born in India, naturalized in the U.S., she climbed her way to the top after studying at the Yale School of Management. One of the few female CEOs of colour in the U.S., she has been an example for ambitious immigrants. 

John Cho

You may recognize this South Korean actor from his role in the 'Star Trek' franchise or as Harold in the 'Harold and Kumar' movies. He was born in Seoul in 1972.

Daniel Dae Kim

Daniel Dae Kim was also born in South Korea and moved to the U.S. He starred in 'Lost' and 'Hawaii 5-0.'

IISuperwomanII Lilly Singh

This Canadian actress and comedian goes by the name of IISuperwomanII on Youtube. /Forbes/ listed her in 2017 as the tenth highest paid Youtube star in the world. In addition, she is considered one of the forty most powerful people in comedy in 2019. Lilly's parents are from India; she was raised as a non-practicing Sikh.

This century is Asian

As you can see, the twenty-first century is Asian. As Parag Khanna says, "They are now speaking. Prepare to see the world from the Asian point of view."
