Americans are fed up with both Trump and Biden
A survey has revealed that the majority of Americans don’t want former president Donald J. Trump or his Democratic successor Joe Biden to run for office in 2024.
Chris Scott, a Democratic strategist from Michigan told The Guardian, “I don’t think Americans want to see a sequel.”
Scott continued, “Americans are fed up with the Donald Trump saga, even though he still has a number of acolytes in the GOP. They’re just ready to be over that chapter and move on."
Back in January, 61% of respondents to CNBC’s All-American Economic Survey said that they didn’t want Trump to seek reelection compared to 30% who believed that he should.
As for Joe Biden, Chris Scott told The Guardian, “With Biden, there’s a lot of people that question: does he have the stamina to do another four years, even though there’s things in his record that have been effective and he’s gotten done?"
Interestingly, in the January poll 70% of respondents said that Biden shouldn’t run again compared to just 19% who supported a second term for the current president.
The January study also revealed that a growing number of registered party voters do not want to see Trump or Biden on the ballot in 2024.
According to a recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll released after Trump's indictment in April, Trump is still the most popular among current or potential GOP candidates.
An article on Biden's popularity by PBS, recent polling data shows only around half of Democrats believe President Biden should run again in 2024.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research did a poll in April that showed that 26% of Americans overall want to see Biden run again.
As for the Democrats, the poll indicates that 47% want Biden to run again, however, a large majority say they’d be likely to support him if he became the nominee.
Even if many Democrats are reluctant to have Biden run for another presidential term, according to PBS, 78% of them say they approve of the job he’s doing as president.
In his deconstruction of the All-American Economics Survey, CNBC journalist Steve Liesman noted that nearly half of respondents said that they didn’t want Biden to run again based on his age alone.
The survey conducted in January found that 47% of those who think Biden should not run say age is a major reason,” Liesman wrote, “including “61% of Democrats who don’t want him on the ballot and 66% of seniors.
“By contrast,” Liesman added, “just 43% of the 18-49 demographic group cite age as a major reason.” However, a piece by PBS published in April points out that many younger republicans do feel that they would like to see somebody younger in office.
However, according to The Guardian, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that most registered voters do not want either Biden or Trump to run again.
However, a lack of stronger candidates from both the Republican and Democratic party means that Americans may be stuck with both men.
