Ontario Premier Doug Ford has become an outspoken critic of Donald Trump following his recent tariff threats. However, Ford wasn’t always an opponent of the US President. A recent video revealed he was happy Trump got elected.

Canada’s Donald Trump?

Ford has often been likened to Canada’s Trump. Politico pointed out in a January 25th article that it wouldn’t be hard to imagine the 60-year-old conservative Ford enjoying a buffet at a UFC event side-by-side with Donald Trump.

The men have similar politics

Trump and Ford both have similar politics. Ford was a center-right businessman who also turned into a politician and held sway over a large number of working-class voters. Ford is also a staunch nationalist and deeply patriotic Canadian.

Ford’s fierce response to tariffs

Ford’s love for his country may be why he responded so fiercely to the threat of a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods imported to the United States from Canada. Canadian Premiers like Ford do have some power over international trade. however, trade policy is mostly a federal responsibility in Canada.

Jumping into action for Canada

As it became clear Trump was very serious about imposing a major tariff on Canadian goods, Ford jumped into action and started suggesting a couple of painful retaliatory measures Ontario could impose on the United States.

Retaliation at its worst

Ford promised Ontario would remove all American liquor from its store shelves, which was something he did, and floated the idea of cutting off energy exports to the United States. He even announced he would ban US companies from government contracts.

Ford was happy Trump won in 2024

However, despite Ford’s nationalist fervor in the face of US tariffs, he was quite happy when Trump took down former Vice President Kamala Harris in November 2024 and won a second term as President of the United States.

A hot mic moment

During a February 3rd press conference, Ford was caught in a hot mic moment saying he was happy that Trump had won the election. “On election day, was I happy this guy won? One hundred percent I was,” Ford was heard saying according to Global News.

Ford feels betrayed by Trump

However, there was a little more to his comments. Immediately after saying that he was happy Trump had won the election, Ford added: “Then the guy pulled out the knife and f-ing yanked it into us.” It’s a sentiment some Canadians likely share with Ford.

An awkward time

Ford’s comments came at a rather inopportune time for the Ontario Premier. He recently called a new election in Ontario and the entire focus of his campaign strategy is based on earning a mandate from Ontarians to fight Trump’s tariffs.

A good change in the US?

When asked about his comments at the same press conference, Ford expressed his disappointment with Trump and his tariffs. “I’m sure there’s millions of Canadians that thought, ‘Oh okay, this might be a good change down in the U.S.,'” Ford said according to CBC News.

“It’s been a disaster”

“It’s been a disaster, I’d never support that guy in my entire life. He goes up and just stabs you right in the heart, forget that… unprovoked, by the way — we aren’t the bad guys,” Ford continued before adding he would “never support that guy again — ever.”
