China builds its own ‘Pentagon’, capable of surviving a nuclear war
British newspaper The Telegraph reports that China is building the world’s largest military command center in Beijing, one prepared to protect Beijing’s top brass in case of a nuclear war.
Nicknamed “Beijing Military City”, The Telegraph writes that US intelligence has stated that the 1,500-acre construction site 20 miles (30 kilometers) southwest from China’s capital and has been in construction since mid-2024.
The Telegraph remarks that the construction of the military complex, with about 100 cranes operating across a three-mile site, stands in stark contrast to halted projects, affected by the property market crisis that has hit China in recent years.
Beijing Military City would be ten times bigger than the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense and the second-largest office building complex in the world.
According to The Financial Times, satellite images studied by US intelligence shows deep holes that experts believe that will be used for large, hardened bunkers, capable to protect China’s military high command in case of a nuclear war.
Dennis Wilder, CIA’s former head of China analysis, told The Telegraph that, if verified, the new complex could hint at Beijing’s intention to build up its “advanced nuclear war-fighting capacity”.
The Financial Times comments that this is part of a series of new projects and weapons developed as part of the 100th year anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army in 2027.
Among other things, Beijing would be rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal and working to better integrate the different branches of the military.
Another pending issue for the government in Beijing? Taiwan, with the People’s Republic of China regarding the self-governed island nation as a breakaway province.
The Telegraph highlights that Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised to bring back Taiwan with mainland China, “reuniting” people from both sides of the strait, whether they like it or not.
According to The Financial Times, US intelligence affirms that Xi has ordered the Chinese military to have developed the capacity to attack the island of Taiwan by 2027.
