Over 20,000 units of equipment have been lost

On February 24th, 2022, Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. What many believed would be a short conflict turned into a multiyear war that has cost Russia hundreds of thousands of casualties and tens of thousands in equipment losses.

What do we know about Russian equipment losses?

Exactly how many Russian units of equipment have been lost in the fighting is difficult to know since Moscow doesn’t provide information on its losses. However, there are some governments and groups that have provided estimates of the Kremlin’s losses.

The Ukrainian General Staff

The Ukrainian General Staff provides the world with daily figures on what has been knocked out by its armed forces and also updates a daily total of the many units of equipment eliminated. However, trusting these figures can be difficult at times.

An independent source on Russian losses

Ukraine is a direct combatant in the war and has a vested interest in its ability to showcase the amount of Russian weapons it's destroying. This is why it's important to look to independent sources for a better idea of what has been destroyed since February 2022.

A reliable source to understand Moscow's losses

One of the best sources of independent information on both Russian and Ukrainian military equipment losses comes from the Dutch open-source intelligence Oryx, which only posts loss figures from verified photo or video evidence of destroyed, damaged, captured, or abandoned weapons.

Russian losses are likely much higher

The way Oryx counts and verifies losses is one of the most accurate ways to gauge Russian losses, though the firm does not on its website that due to the nature of its verification process, Russian losses are likely far higher than it projects. Let's look at the losses that Oryx has confirmed.

Russia has lost 19,808 units of equipment

As of February 24th, 2025, Oryx reported that Russia has lost 20,447 units of military equipment since launching its invasion.
