Where does Biden stand on abortion rights in America?

Abortion has become one of the biggest hot-button issues in America following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. But where does President Joe Biden stand on the issue? Here's what the president revealed in 2023 about his beliefs on abortion.

“I’m a practicing Catholic. I’m not big on abortion, but guess what? Roe vs. Wade got it right,” the president expounded to a group of one hundred donors during a June 27th 2023 fundraiser in Chevy Chase Maryland according to reporting from The Hill. 

The president explained that the state should not regulate abortions within the first three months of pregnancy according to CBS News, during which Biden said the decision to have an abortion was between a woman and her family, the news agency added. 

"Next three months is between a woman and her doctor, The last three months have to be negotiated, because you can't—unless you are in a position where your physical health is at stake—you can't do it,” the president continued. 

Biden also reportedly spent some time criticizing states that had passed laws banning abortions after the Supreme Court overturned Roe Vs. Wade, 20 of whom had passed extreme restrictions or bans at the time Biden made his comments on the issue. 

The Hill noted Biden’s personal discomfort with abortion was front and center after the Supreme Court moved to overturn Roe vs. Wade but it quickly became clear that his opinion on the matter wouldn’t affect the political position he’d taken as a Democrat. 

“It’s personal to all practicing Catholics and it’s difficult. I mean, I’m sure it’s something he struggles with often. I don’t know if it’s on a daily basis, but certainly going forward for the next few weeks it will be,” explained Biden ally Chris Carney at the time. 

Biden signed an Executive Order in July 2022 protecting access to the abortion pill, as well as access to contraception and promised to continue doing what he could at the executive level to ensure women around the country had access to medical care. 

“President Biden has made clear that the only way to secure a woman’s right to choose is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe as federal law,” a statement from the White House read on the day Biden signed Executive Order 14076. 

“Until then, he has committed to doing everything in his power to defend reproductive rights and protect access to safe and legal abortion,” the statement continued. 

Since that order, Biden and his administration have worked tirelessly to ensure women had access to medical care and he has signed a number of executive orders since taking office intended to protect abortion care in America. 

Biden's current position on abortion politically is that he and his administration support codifying the right to abortion and opposed the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, according to Wikipedia's analysis of the president's social policies since taking office.
