What does the life of a Princess look like in the military?
After completing an IB program at a boarding school in Wales, Spain's Crown Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias will join the General Military Academy of Zaragoza in her country after the summer.
According to an official decree, the military training of the Princess has the benefit of reinforcing "the increasingly relevant role of women in the Armed Forces."
According to the Spanish Undersecretary of Defense order, Princess Leonor must join the military academy as a Lady Cadet during the 2023-2024 academic year, starting at 10:00 a.m. on August 17.
On July 7, the Spanish Crown heiress visited the academy for the Delivery of Dispatches Act. Her parents, King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia, and Defense Minister Margarita Robles will accompany Leonor.
The Princess will enter the I Cadet Battalion. After two weeks of going through the Reception, Orientation, and Adaptation to Military Life Module, she will spend a month in the Basic Military Training Module.
Upon arrival at the Academy, cadets receive their essential military equipment. They are accommodated in cabins for two, four, or twelve people, so Leonor will share a room as she already did at her boarding school in Wales.
Princess Leonor will be forced to wear the military uniform, and her life will be marked by discipline, hierarchy, and unity.
The Princess, just under 18 years old, will be in an internment regime and can only leave the barracks with justified permits.
During this stage, she will go through physical training, carry out shooting exercises with rifles and pistols, march, and take topographical tours.
Princess Leonor will have to reach goals like a specific number of daily push-ups and running for at least 45 minutes three times a week. According to local outlets, she has been preparing and training in the Zarzuela palace this summer.
As any cadet in an educational center of Sapin's Armed Forces, Princess Leonor has the right to receive 417 euros monthly. However, she will waive this remuneration, the Royal House announced.
Once Leonor's first year is over, and after giving her pledge of allegiance, Leonor's military training will take her to Pontevedra, the Naval School of Marín as a First Class Midshipman. There, she will embark on the Juan Sebastián Elcano schoolship.
Finally, in her third year, Leonor will travel to San Javier (Murcia, Spain) to enter the General Air and Space Academy. The Princess will go through the three brigades of the Armed Forces, as her father, King Felipe, did between 1985 and 1988.
Once this period of training is over, the Princess will be granted the title of Lieutenant of the Army, fundamental specialty Infantry, Naval Ensign of the Navy, and Air and Space Force Lieutenant.
“Beyond my responsibility, I am happy because I know how much the Spanish people value our Armed Forces. It is an important moment in my life, and I feel very eager and convinced to continue learning”, Leonor said on July 5 at the Princess of Girona Foundation awards.
Other European heirs Leonor's age, such as Ingrid Alexandra from Norway, Isabel from Belgium (in the picture), orandAmalia from Holland, have also received military training.
After finishing her military training, part of her role as the future Queen of Spain and Supreme Commander of the Army, Leonor will begin her university studies, most likely in Law, like her father.
