Trump melts down online as classified documents case heats up
Former President Donald Trump has had a bit of a meltdown on his social media platform Truth Social, ranting about a possible future indictment over his handling of classified and national defense-related documents after leaving office in 2021.
This isn’t the first time Trump’s taken to social media to go off the rails about one of his many impending legal crises. But it is the first time the former president seems like he’s genuinely scared about the prospects of being indicted in a case that could ruin him.
“Reports are the Marxist Special Prosecutor, DOJ, & FBI, want to Indict me on the BOXES HOAX, despite all of the wrongdoing that they have done for SEVEN YEARS, including SPYING ON MY CAMPAIGN,” Trump wrote in a June 4th Truth Social post.
“Biden Crimes go unpunished, including that he had Boxes in Chinatown, in his garage by the “Corvette,” & 1,850 Boxes in Delaware that he won’t allow anyone to see. That is real OBSTRUCTION!” the former President of the United States continued.
Much of what Trump wrote can be explained away as bluster that was probably meant to distract his followers from the very real fact that the former president is in hot water.
Claims that Trump’s campaign was being spied on by the FBI have long been disproven according to Salon, and Biden’s document case is a vastly different animal than Trump’s situation. Biden had the wherewithal to actually hand over his documents immediately.
Salon noted that Biden’s lawyers handed over all classified government documents that were found at his house immediately while Trump opted to defy a grand jury subpoena to return his documents, and that was after rejecting several requests for their return.
“They seek retribution for Republicans looking into Biden’s CRIMES! I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!” Trump said at the end of his rant.
Unfortunately for Trump, it is starting to look like he did do something wrong and the fact that the former president’s lawyers sat down with officials from the Justice Department on June 4th might explain why he got so heated on Truth Social hours after the meeting.
NBC News confirmed that three lawyers from Trump’s legal team—James Trusty, John Rowley, and Lindsey Halligan—met with Jack Smith and other officials from the Justice Department on June 4th, just days before a Florida grand jury was set to reconvene.
Trump got even more squirrely the following day when he went off on prosecutors again in an all-caps message on Truth Social complaining about possibly being charged by the Department of Justice when no other president had been for similar reasons as him.
“HOW CAN DOJ POSSIBLY CHARGE ME, WHO DID NOTHING WRONG, WHEN NO OTHER PRESIDENT’S WERE CHARGED, WHEN JOE BIDEN WON’T BE CHARGED FOR ANYTHING,” Trump wrote, complaining again about how his life wasn’t fair…
Trump waxed and waned on Biden’s 1850 documents, some of which he said dated to when the President was a senator—a fact he claimed shocked Democrats—before he moved on to former president Bill Clinton’s documents scandal and his wife’s email issues.
“PRESIDENT CLINTON HAD DOCUMENTS, AND WON IN COURT, CROOKED HILLARY DELETED 33,000 EMAILS, MANY CLASSIFIED, AND WASN’T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING CHARGED! ONLY TRUMP - THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME! “Trump added.
The Washington Post reported on June 6th that the Florida grand jury was likely to hear witness testimony in the case according to people who were familiar with the case that the news organization spoke with, and ensuing posts from Trump should be interesting.
It is still not known why Jack Smith opened a parallel grand jury in Florida but it could be because federal prosecutors are planning to bring charges against the former president or other individuals there rather than, or in addition to, charges in Washington.
