These are the foods Americans are ordering on their delivery apps
What are Americans ordering from the food delivery services on their phones? This may not be a question you’ve ever wondered about, but it has a very intriguing answer based on what one of these delivery services discovered.
In October 2023, DoorDash celebrated its tenth anniversary and to mark the occasion the delivery service released its data on how American preferences have changed from 2013 to 2030 along with a whole host of other interesting information.

One strange tidbit DoorDash discovered in 2023 was that Chicago was the number one city in the country for plan-ahead food orders. Chicago was followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, and Philadelphia.

However, services like DoorDash don’t just let you order food. Everything from your groceries to drugstore products can be ordered with a phone, and you will never guess how that’s changed what’s being ordered and when by some people.

One of the interesting facts DoorDash discovered in its data was that orders increase by a lot on days that follow really big holidays. For example, orders of ibuprofen rose by as much as 400% following St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and New Year’s Eve…

Some customers were quite smart when ordering their ibuprofen and paired it with food. The most common types of food paired with the over-the-counter medicine were Cheesesteaks, Nacho fries, Bacon Egg sandwiches, and Cold Brew Coffees.

There were quite a lot of weird combinations when it came to food choices, too. Some of the most absurd combinations pointed out by DoorDash's data included hot sauce and cinnamon twists, hash browns and soda, and fries paired with chili.

Donuts, chocolate brownies, and strawberry cheesecake were some of the top sweets that people added to their orders in 2023. But exactly what were Americans ordering the most in 2023 and how did it differ from a decade ago? Let’s take a look.
