The United States and other countries that are supporting Ukraine's fight against Russia
The US is overtaking European countries and EU institutions in its financial support to Ukraine. This is shown by the new figures published on February 21 by the "Ukraine Support Tracker" of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).
The new figures now take into account the period from January 24th,2022 to January 15th, 2023. Previously, the data was only available up to November 22, 2022. In the months from November 2022 to January 2023, the USA has significantly increased its support to Ukraine.
While the US as an individual country had previously been Ukraine's biggest supported, European institutions and EU countries had collectively provided greater support to Ukraine. However, this has now changed.
The US pledged a total of over 77 billion dollars in support to Ukraine. Military support accounts for the largest share with over 46 billion dollars, followed by financial aid with over 26 billion dollars and humanitarian aid received 3.9 billion dollars. The proportion of military support almost doubled between November 2022 and January 2023 compared to January 2022 and November 2022.
Although these are not individual countries, the institutions of the European Union (EU) are also supporting Ukraine - primarily with financial resources of around 35 billion euros or 37 billion USD. Financial aid accounts for the largest share at over 30 billion euros (31 billions USD), while military aid amounts to just over 3 billion euros (3.1 billion USD).
The UK is third, spending over €7.9 billion or 8.38 billion dollars, more than half of which is for military assets.
In terms of financial support to Ukraine, Germany ranks fourth with over 6 billion euros/6.3 billion USD. The military aid amounts to more than 2.3 billion euros (2.4 billion USD), the humanitarian aid to 2.5 billion euros (2.65 billion USD).
Canada pledges over 3.5 billion euros or 3.71 billion USD to Ukraine, ranking 5th.
Poland supports Ukraine with over 3.3 billion euros/ 3.5 billion USD.
France has moved from 8th to 7th place. Emmanuel Macron's government is supporting Ukraine with over 1.3 billion euros or 1.38 billion USD.
The Netherlands have ousted Norway from the list of Ukraine's top eight supporters. They gave the Ukraine over 1.2 billion euros or 1.27 billion USD to Ukraine.
The EU countries and EU institutions together have given over 54.9 billion euros or 58.24 billion dollars to support Ukraine. Over 3 billion euros/3.18 billion USD alone were handed over to aid Ukraine in the months from November 2022 to January 2023. The United States has supported Ukraine with 26 billion euros/27.5 billion USD in this period alone.
At the same time, the USA is giving more than 18 billion euros (19 billion dollars) more than all EU countries and EU institutions combined. Other donor countries are supporting Ukraine with a total of 15.5 billion euros or 16.4 billion USD.
If you look at the statistics of the "Ukraine Support Tracker" in relation to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the supporter countries, it becomes clear which countries give the most in relation to their GDP. Here the ranking is completely different. The statistics now also take into account the expenditure of the countries for refugees.
Here, too, the top 3 have changed due to the inclusion of the figures for the months of November 2022 to January 2023 and the consideration of expenses for refugees. Poland now ranks first with over 2%, followed by Estonia with 1.7% and Lithuania with around 1.4% each of their GDP. 1.5% of this government aid in Poland according to GDP is spent on refugees alone.
Due to the strong support provided by the USA in recent months, they are now in 12th place. The fact that the USA is providing the highest financial support to Ukraine and still ranks behind countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia is due to the equally high GDP of the United States of America. The IfW Kiel list includes data from 40 donor countries.
Germany comes in 13th place in this list with a 0.4% share of GDP, right after the USA. Half of this is spent on refugees in Germany.
The UK now ranks 14th in support of Ukraine in terms of GDP, behind the US and Germany.
