Trump had a terrible time when he spoke at the Libertarian National Convention
Former President Donald Trump is used to speaking in front of crowds that fawn over his every word but he got no such treatment when he spoke at the Libertarian National Convention on May 26th. Trump booed throughout his speech!
The former president was invited to speak at the Libertarian National Convention but as Politico noted about his appearance, “it hardly could have gone worse.” Trump was met with a very unimpressed group of voters.
Just moments after Trump began speaking, the audience made its displeasure with the former president known and started to jeer and boo him, but the former president wasn’t deterred and continued with his speech.
After walking through his major policy points—and pumping up several of his wins when he was president—Trump appeared to get sick of the crowd's near-constant jeering and turned on those he was trying to win over.
The former president made fun of the third party for its electoral process but he was not upset enough to shy away from asking for their help according to Politico. Trump tried to appeal to the crowd and asked for their endorsement jokingly.
Trump was explaining how American political commentator Deroy Murdoch said Trump would speak at the Libertarian National Convention and also said the convention should nominate him, to which Trump received more boos.
Rather than continuing his speech, the former president smiled off the reaction and said “that’s nice” before telling the crowd: “Only if you want to win. Only if you want to win” in reference to his possible nomination.
“Maybe you don’t want to win. Maybe you don’t want to win. Thank you, Deroy. Thank you,” the former president continued. But, the boos didn’t stop and Trump decided he would continue attacking the Libertarian Party.
“No, only do that if you want to win. If you want to lose, don’t do that. Keep getting your 3% every four years,” Trump said according to a transcript of his remarks from Rev. He went on to talk more about Murdoch’s remarks but quickly returned to the nomination.
“I think you should nominate me or at least vote for me and we should win together. You heard those words? Nominate me or vote. Vote for me because the Libertarians want to vote for me and most of them will,” Trump said.
The boos and jeering continued as Trump explained they needed to get rid of the worst president and that’s when he went for the party’s jugular, making fun of the fact that the Libertarian Party only nets around 3% of the vote.
“So what is the purpose of the Libertarian Party getting 3%? What is the reason to take a chance of having this horrible president destroy our country? Which he will do in far less than four years,” the former president stated.
The comments likely were meant as a dig against the party since Trump immediately said that he was committing to put a libertarian in his cabinet if he was reelected but it was not an offer that resonated with the audience.
The boos and heckles kept rolling in and Trump went on to say “you can keep going the way you have for the last long decades and get your 3%, then meet again, get another 3%. No, you want to make yourself winners. It’s time to be winners.”
“You have a lot of common sense. It’s time to be winners. Well, think of it. I’m asking for the Libertarian Party’s endorsement or at least lots of your votes,” Trump added. “Much of my record is Libertarian,” he continued, earning a very negative response.
Trump went on to finish his speech, working through the continued jeers of the audience but the speech likely didn’t help the former president. It certainly didn’t help him achieve the nomination from the Libertarian Party, which Oliver Chase went on to win.
Audience members shouted out calling Trump a “liar” and “panderer” while people could also be saying: “You crushed our rights” according to Politico, which noted the problems Trump will face trying to expand his base and cut off a third party threat.
CBS News reported that Joe Biden was also invited by the organizers of the Libertarian National Convention to speak at the event, but he declined the offer.
