The Apple AI era is finally here. The company just introduced its first generative AI features for the iPhone.

Apple + OpenAI = Apple Intelligence

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10th, the company unveiled the first batch of tools powered by “Apple Intelligence,” which was possible by joining with Open AI to integrate its artificial intelligence tools into Apple’s devices.

What to expect

Once Apple Intelligence rolls out to iPhones, Macs, and iPads later this year, it's supposed to turn sketches into images, sort through photos and videos, rewrite emails, and change the tone of messages, according to Wired magazine.

A smarter Siri

Moreover, the AI software will allow the voice assistant Siri to tap into different apps to string together smarter responses.

‘Genmojis’

Users will also be able to create emojis or ‘genmojis’ (generated emoji) just by providing a description. Genmojis can also be created to look like people in iPhone users' photo galleries.

GPT-4o

The latest model of ChatGPT (GPT-4o) will be integrated in the software so that users can access the AI chatbot without having to exit their applications.

Only available for latest Apple devices

There’s just one catch: It won’t work on your old iPhone. Apple is limiting these AI features to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which run on Apple’s A17 Pro chip; the iPads Pro and Air, which run on Apple’s M1 chip or later versions; and various Mac computers that run on the M1 chip or later.

An iPhone upgrade strategy?

Because of this, some experts have said that the announcement might also be Apple’s shot at convincing customers to upgrade to newer iPhones this fall.

“A brand new standard of privacy on AI”

Regarding privacy, interactions between AI and user will not be stored by OpenAI, the company said. In addition, user IPs will be permanently hidden.

Enthusiasm among users and investors

The announcement has excited Apple fans and investors alike: the company’s shares closed up 7% to a new record high of $207.15 per share on a day after the company announced Apple Intelligence.
