World Number One Scottie Scheffler Charged with Assault!

World number one and Master’s champion Scottie Scheffler has been arrested following a “misunderstanding with traffic flow,” per Jeff Darlington of ESPN.

A shuttle bus involved in the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, accidentally struck and killed a pedestrian in the early hours of this morning, causing a police cordon, per the BBC.

Scheffler, while on his way to the course, tried to avoid the cordon, seemingly not understanding the severity of the incident. Despite orders from a police officer to stop, he tried to skirt the police presence to make it to the golf course, per The Mirror.

Following the orders from the police officer, Scheffler reportedly continued to drive while the officer attempted to “attach” himself to the golfer’s car. The officer remained attached for up to 20 yards while Scheffler continued to drive, per ESPN.

Scheffler remained in his car despite the police officer ordering him to stop the vehicle and remove himself from it. After roughly 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window when the officer grabbed his arm, opened the door, removed Scheffler from the car, and handcuffed him.

ESPN reported Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and offered to help the golfer, before being told by a member of the Louisville Metro Police Department, “Right now he is going to jail.”

Scheffler was arrested and charged by the LMPD. His charge sheet reads: “Second degree assault of a police officer, Third degree criminal mischief, Reckless driving, and Reckless driving,” per the LMPD.

The LMPD has announced on its website that Scheffler has been released from jail.

The BBC reports Scheffler is making his way back to Valhalla, but it remains unknown if he can continue in the PGA Championship given his recent arrest. There is also a chance he could be given a two-stroke penalty for missing his tee time if he cannot return in time for his scheduled start time.

Scheffler started the tournament well, finishing the first round at four under, five shots back from Xander Schauffle. Scheffler is attempting to be the first player to win the first two majors in a calendar year since Jordan Spieth in 2015, per the PGA website.
