Will a three-peat make KC the best team in NFL history?
The Kansas City Chiefs are just 60 minutes of football away from NFL history. Should they win on February 9th in New Orleans, they will become the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row. With credentials like that, it may be time to start asking, is this the greatest team ever assembled?
We aren’t necessarily suggesting the 2024 Chiefs roster is the best ever assembled, but we are mooting the possibility that, should they win, they will become the greatest team, and dynasty in NFL history.
In June 2024, MLFootball on X (formerly Twitter), posted some numbers that showcased just how good the Chiefs have been since 2018. “6 AFC Championship appearances, 3 Super Bowl victories, 4 SB Appearances, 3x SB MVP, 2x NFL MVP.” Since then, he has led his team to a 15-2 regular season and yet another Super Bowl appearance.

Those numbers showcase just how dominant this Chiefs team has been. It may not feel as indomitable as the Patriots did in the 2000s and 2010s, but they are at the very least matching them on the field.
If you have read our content before, you will have seen we like to use advanced metrics to contextualize teams and their results. The Chiefs in 2024 have made a mockery of all metrics, finishing the season 11th in offensive, and 17th in defensive EPA/Play, per SumerSports.
Offensively, the Chiefs were surrounded by the Arizona Cardinals and the Atlanta Falcons. Even more stark is who they compared to defensively, with the Washington Commanders and Las Vegas Raiders finishing one spot above and below the Chiefs in EPA/Play. Washington aside, those are not teams you would expect to be keeping the Chiefs company in any metric.
Despite all of that, the Kansas City Chiefs finished 15-2 in the regular season, with their second loss coming in week 18 having rested most of their starters. They cruised through the regular season, clearly playing within themselves at times, and won anyway. Of course, there were some tight finishes, but they were able to avoid the mistakes that lose you games. Their opponents weren’t.
It’s always hard to write ‘they just know how to win’ about any team, as it’s so unquantifiable, it’s almost useless. Yet, here we're, claiming the Chiefs just know how to win. Look at their last two Super Bowl wins. A 38-35 victory over the Eagles with a last-second field goal to win a shootout, and an overtime win over the 49ers in which the Chiefs’ nous was on full display.
It’s going to be hard for Mahomes to break many of Tom Brady’s records given how long TB12 played for, but, when it’s all said and done, he may be the only quarterback with a chance to surpass Brady. Mahomes finished the 2024 season with 3,928 yards passing with 26 TDs and 11 INTs, adding 307 yards and two scores on the ground, and people were claiming he was having a bad year!
The argument for Kansas City becoming the greatest team of all time is easy enough. If they win, they will have achieved something no one else has. It’s not an aberration either, given their ongoing success, this three-peat would come with a completely reloaded roster from their first Super Bowl in modern times, showing they know how to build a winning team.

There are certainly other teams and dynasties with arguments for being the best in NFL history. S0, let’s take a look at those and see how they compare to the 2018-present Kansas City Chiefs. We’re going to use Bryan DeArdo’s rankings for CBS Sports as the basis for our comparison.
The Cowboys of the early 90s were a true juggernaut. With Jimmy Johnson at the helm, ‘America’s Team’ was able to build an outrageously good roster. Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Darren Woodson were just a few notable Cowboys during this era. After winning Super Bowl XXX, Dallas became the first team to win three Super Bowls in four years.
Bill Walsh transformed the NFL forever with his West Coast offensive system, which led to five Super Bowl wins in ten years. Four were won with Joe Montana under center, before Steve Young stepped out from under Montana’s shadow to win Super Bowl XXIX. There’s arguably never been a better quarterback transition at any level of the sport.
There’s a reason the Super Bowl trophy is called the ‘Lombardi,’ and it’s due to the legendary Packers head coach, Vince. Lombardi led the Packers to three consecutive titles. Only two of those were Super Bowls, but still, incredibly impressive. The Packers dominated the 1960s like maybe no team has ever dominated a decade in NFL history.
Per CBS Sports, the Steelers are the only team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice and to win four Super Bowls in a six-year span. Their dominance was due to their incredible scouting department, which was able to draft five Hall of Famers in four years, that’s essentially unheard of.
You almost have to separate the Patriots’ dynasty in two, with the early-2000s vintage looking entirely different from the team that won so much in the 2010s. The two constants were Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, who are probably the best quarterback and coach in NFL history. The Pats dominated for nearly two decades, which we’re not sure the Chiefs can do.
Can the Chiefs stake a claim to be the best team in NFL history with a third-successive Super Bowl win? We think there’s certainly an argument for it, but let us know what you think in the comments!
