Team Europe win!

Team Europe put on a three-day demolition job in the Ryder Cup last weekend, beating the USA 16.5-11.5 to extend their home winning streak to 30 years.

Since 1993

The last Team USA side to win in Europe was the team in 1993 led by Tom Watson and Fred Couples, winning at The Belfry in England.

What went wrong?

Despite that, this year's USA team could not get it done at the Marco Simone, but why were they blown out of the water so early on?

The pairings

The most noticeable fault in the USA team at the start of the Ryder Cup was the foursome and four-ball pairings to kick-start the competition.

Taking a beating

The USA was beaten 7-1 in the foursomes and only accumulated 5.5 points out of a possible 16 in the foursomes and four balls together. The team aspect was a nightmare for the USA.

Worst foursome performance in history

The match that summed the US's performance up in the foursomes was Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka losing 9&7 to Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg, the worst defeat in Ryder Cup history.

A fractured locker room

According to the irishmirror.ie, Patrick Cantley had reportedly 'fractured' the USA locker room after he complained the USA players were not getting paid for playing at the Ryder Cup.

Refusing to wear a cap

Cantley allegedly refused to wear the Team USA cap in response to the lack of payment for the Ryder Cup, having worn one at the Presidents Cup last year, where the USA players are paid.

Xander and Patrick

Xander Schauffele joined Patrick Cantley in his disagreements and reportedly sat away from the rest of the team, unsurprisingly playing together on day one.

Lack of preparation

Each member of Team Europe had played at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth earlier in the month, but nine of the Americans hadn't played since August.

Thomas and Homa the best

Justin Thomas and Max Homa were the only tour players to play in September, and they were the top-performing players for the USA, taking 3.5 points out of five.

Not picking LIV

Even though Brooks Koepka was picked, captain Zach Johnson left out Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Talor Gooch. Three players who know the Ryder Cup or were on form leading into the event.

Players on form

Johnson took five points from five at the previous Ryder Cup, DeChambeau has won two of the last three LIV events, while Gooch is a three-time LIV League champion this year.

Team Europe too good

The USA may not have picked their best players available. However, Team Europe seemed too good for the USA over the three days.

Europe’s top three

Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland proved why they are at the top of the golf world rankings, taking 10.5 points of the 16.5 Team Europe accumulated between the three of them.

A team effort

Each player contributed at least half a point at the tournament and proved again that Europeans play at their best when they play on home turf.
