Southgate's choice

There are a few names that didn’t quite make the cut for England’s World Cup campaign in Qatar. Some because of injury and others who have just been overlooked by England’s manager Gareth Southgate. Let’s take a look at who won’t be going to the desert this winter.

Reece James (Chelsea)

The Chelsea and England right back turned professional with Chelsea in 2017. He made his England debut in 2020.

Too risky

Not having fully recovered yet from a knee injury he picked up playing in the Champions league, the England manager did not want to take the risk.

Jadon Sancho (Manchester United)

Jadon Sancho plays as a winger for Manchester United and the England national team.

Not hitting the mark

Despite showing some early promise at the start of the season his Manchester United form is well bellow the promise he showed when he was playing in Germany.

James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

The England and Southampton Midfielder got his first England call up in a friendly against Germany in 2017.

Not loved by Southgate

Having been left out of the final 23-man group for the European Championship in 2021, the midfielder again was not selected in England boss Gareth Southgate’s final 26.

Tammy Abraham (Roma)

The ex-Chelsea player joined Roma last year and the striker seems to be comfortable in Italy.

Struggling to get the ball in the back of the net

That aside, over the last few weeks his performances have been disappointing and his failure in the face of the goal posts has given Gareth Southgate enough reason to drop the striker for the World Cup.

Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

Fikayo Tomori is a centre-back for Serie A club AC Milan and England. Although he was born in Canada, he represents England at international level.

Puzzling, to say the least

It has come as a shock really that the young player won't be joining the England team. Tomori has played brilliantly both this and the previous season, helping the Italian side claim their first Serie A title in 11 years last season.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

A veteran striker with 26 England caps, who helped Leicester win the Premier League in 2016. He’s fast, feisty and passionate.

Energy over experience

Southgate would never drop captain Harry Kane and preferred the youth of Callum Wilson over Vardy’s experience.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

With 11 caps already to his name, the 25 year old was hoping that his current good form would be enough to see him in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Bad timing

However, with a shoulder injury adding to his hamstring problem, Dominic Calvert-Lewin will sadly be watching the World Cup from the sofa, like the rest of us.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)

The 25 year-old West Ham winger has played four games for England. He moved to West Ham in 2020 from Hull City.

Not up to scratch

Fans put his omission from the squad down to his poor start to the season with the Hammers. Disappointing after such a strong previous season.

Ivan Toney (Brentford)

Toney is still waiting for his first senior game for England, despite being called up for the national squad in September's Nations League.

A simple case of better names in the mix?

Sadly not this time, Ivan. The decision was much to the bemusement of many fans and, in particular, Thomas Frank - the Brentford manager.
