The official starter of The Open from 1975 to 2015, Ivor Robson has passed away aged 83.

The R&A described Robson as, ‘one of the most distinctive voices in golf during his incredible career.

Began at Carnoustie

Robson’s career began back in 1975 at the 104th Open at Carnoustie, with legend of the game Tom Watson ending up champion.

Retiring in 2015

Robson’s final Open was in 2015, taking place at the famous Old Course at St. Andrews. American Zach Johnson walked away with the famous Claret Jug trophy.

Remarkable career

Robson’s distinctive Scottish accent announced 18,995 during his career, his famous “on the tee…” introductions were a key part of every Open weekend.

Retirement message

Upon retirement, Robson said, “It has been a wonderful career. It's been a great honour. The way I have been treated by players, officials, sponsors… thank you all very much.”

R&A Statement

R&A Chief Executive Martin Slumbers released a statement saying, “As official starter at The Open for over 40 years, his voice was instantly recognisable and synonymous with the Championship for players and millions of golf fans worldwide.”
