Another crazy title race?

The Premier League season is nearly back and the title race between Manchester City and Arsenal could be the closest it's ever been with preseason and transfers nearly wrapped up.

Heartbreak

Last season, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team was beaten to the Premier League title on the final day by Manchester City, missing out on the trophy and the biggest prize money in Premier League history.

'Central Revenue System'

Payments are spread across six different categories through the divisions 'Central Revenue System.' The Premier League believes it's the fairest way to distribute money.

Making money

According to Football 365, Manchester City were paid £176.2m (€205m, $223m) as champions who had the most games televised in 2023. In comparison, Southampton finished bottom and received £103.6m (€120m, $130m).

Broadcast deals

The Premier League merits payments on a sliding scale from 1st to 20th, making up combined earnings from domestic and international broadcast deals. The domestic payment was equal for all teams in 2023, earning £31m (€36m, $40m) each.

£3.1 million difference

According to TalkSport, the difference between each position in 2023 was £3.1m (€3.62m, $3.9m). Football 365 estimated Man City earned £62.1m (€72m, $78m) for finishing first and Arsenal £59m (€69m, $74m).

Facility fees

The only other part of the prize money that isn't fixed and shared equally is the facility fees, which are based on how many times each club has been selected for television.

Making a difference

This means even if a team finishes higher in the league, they can still get paid less than a team lower than them if they are on TV more. For example, in 2023 Everton finished 17th (£120.5m, €140m, $152m), and Bournemouth finished 15th (£117.5m, €136m, $148m).

30 games for Arsenal

Last season, Arsenal had the most televised games (30), worth around £26m (€30m, $33m) in 2023. Manchester City had 27 games shown, which earned £23.6m (€27m, $29m).

Come so close

With £3m (€3.5m, $3.8m) in difference for the facility fees, Arsenal matched Manchester City in total prize money for the campaigns but came so close to hitting a record amount had they pipped City to the title.

Will they do it next season?

Will Arsenal go one step further this season and beat the unbeatable Manchester City to the Premier League trophy and the prize money record?
