The Premier League's greatest teams

Since its inaugural season in 1992, the Premier League has provided football with some of the greatest teams in its history.

Who are they?

Let's take a look and see how they became the Premier League's finest teams to date.

Blackburn Rovers (1995)

The Blackburn Rovers team of 1995 goes down as one of the most surprising teams to win the Premier League in the history of English football.

Stopping Manchester United

Rovers were only promoted to the top division three years prior to their success in 1995 and managed to end Manchester United's domination of the trophy after they had won every year before. England legend Alan Shearer was the top scorer with 34 goals.

Leicester City (2016)

Before Leicester City's Premier League win in 2016, the team survived by the skin of their teeth after winning seven of the last nine fixtures in their first season back in the league.

Bottom to top

Under the new guidance of Claudio Ranieri, Leicester carried their momentum on into the new season in an unbelievable turnaround to go on and win the league with 81 points.

Manchester United (1999)

The 1998/99 Manchester United team were history makers, becoming the first team in English football history to win the league, FA Cup, and European Cup treble.

Winning by a point

Despite the treble success, United only won the title by a single point, pipping Arsenal out on the final day after being behind them in the race with only three games to go. The team will go down as one of the greatest for its resilience and determination to win.

Manchester City (2012)

After heavy investment from the Mansour Group, the 2011/12 season was the first season Manchester City had laid the building blocks to Premier League success.

Winning in dramatic fashion

The team won the league with 89 points. However, with what should have been a routine win against relegation-threatened QPR, the Citizens were 2-1 down in stoppage time. Still, two late goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero dramatically saw the title fall into City's lap for the first time.

Chelsea (2005)

Under the guidance of Portuguese mastermind Jose Mourinho, the 2004/5 Chelsea team accumulated 95 points and only lost one game in their pursuit of the title.

Strong defence

The team is seen as being the greatest defensive team in the league's history, recording 21 clean sheets and only conceding a mesmerizing 15 goals throughout the whole campaign.

Arsenal (2004)

The only side in Premier League history to go an entire season without losing a game is the majestic Arsenal 'Invincibles' of 2004.

'Invincible'

The team accumulated 90 points for the season with 26 victories and 12 draws, led by French superstar Thierry Henry who scored 30 Premier League goals in 37 games for the Gunners.

Manchester United (2008)

With aforementioned teams having unbeatable seasons or super points tallies, the Manchester United team of 2008 was extraordinarily different due to the teams they had to face.

Fighting away competition

Both Arsenal and Chelsea pushed hard for the title with Arsenal top in March. However, super form at the end of the season eclipsed both London sides and saw them win the title. The season was even more special because they beat competitors Chelsea in the Champions League Final.

Manchester City (2022)

The most recent Premier League champions were a vintage Pep Guardiola side that won 29 games and finished on 93 points for the year.

Playing with no striker

Perhaps the most amazing component of this team was the sheer domination and amount of goals scored without a recognizable center forward. The team amassed 99 goals in the campaign partly due to the brilliance of Kevin De Bruyne in midfield.

Liverpool (2020)

Liverpool's first-ever Premier League trophy came in dark times, due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Prior to the lockdown, Liverpool had won 26 games in 27 fixtures, nearly securing the title before the halt in the season.

Project restart

Once the season got back underway, Liverpool had the title won with seven games to play despite only winning six of their last 11 games, falling short of the 100-point mark by one point.

Manchester City (2018)

Liverpool came close in 2020, but the only team to reach a century of points in Premier League history is the 2017/2018 Manchester City team.

Record breakers

The City side broke many records in their fabulous campaign – they got the most points, most goals (106), most away points (50), and most consecutive wins (18).
