Playmaker Award

Historically, the goal scorers have been the focus of the attack. However, in recent years, more love and appreciation have been shown to the players setting the goals up, with the Premier League setting up the Playmaker Award in 2017.

The candidates

With that being said, here are the most likely candidates to win the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award for 2024/2025!

Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City)

Five players have won the Playmaker Award, and Kevin de Bruyne is the runaway leader, with three of them to his name. He won his first with 16 assists, his second with a record-equalling 20, and his third with 16 again.

Setting up Haaland

The Belgian ace will be favourite again to lift the award with his partner in crime Erling Haaland continuing to rifle in the goals for Pep Guardiola's side. Last season, he got ten assists in just 1,227 league minutes, so if fully fit, you can expect him to top the charts.

Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is the star playmaker for Mikel Arteta and the key piece to unlocking any team's defence for the 'Gunners.' The Norwegian ace can create chances out of nothing and skip past players like they aren't even there.

Upward trajectory

According to the GiveMeSport, Odegaard has continued to improve his attacking output every season, going from four assists in 2022 to ten assists last season. Arsenal will need him to continue on his upward trajectory if they have any chance of winning the league this season.

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Despite registering eight assists in the campaign last season, no one created more chances than Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, according to Squawka, having registered 114 chances.

Bolstering the forward line

United have bolstered their forward line, bringing in former Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, who scored 11 goals in Serie A last season. With the addition of another striker to complement Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho, you can expect more assists.

Trent Alexander Arnold (Liverpool)

In three of the last six seasons for Liverpool, Trent Alexander Arnold has registered over ten assists in the Premier League, showing he is capable of touching the top of the charts when on full form from the right-back position.

New manager

Under new manager Arne Slot, his tactical style may unlock the best version of Trent in a Liverpool shirt, with emphasis on his fullbacks playing high up the pitch and creating chances from wide areas. Could he have another 13-assist campaign like he did in 2020?

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

It would be unfair to leave the reigning Playmaker of the Season winner out of this list after contributing 13 assists to Aston Villa's highly successful season last year, in which they reached the Champions League spots.

A complete player

Under new manager Unai Emery, Ollie Watkins has become one of the most complete forwards in European football, scoring 19 goals to go along with the Playmaker award. Can the English footballer challenge for both titles this season?

Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Chelsea's Cole Palmer finished second to Ollie Watkins in the assists column last season, picking up 11 after a phenomenal debut season in London.

33 in 33

Transfermarkt reports that Palmer had 33 goal involvements (22 goals, 11 assists) in 33 games for Chelsea in the Premier League last season. With more free-flowing football under new boss Enzo Maresca, Palmer could easily increase his goals and assists this season.

Son Heung-Min (Tottenham)

Tottenham captain Son Heung-Min had a fantastic first season under boss Ange Postecoglou, contributing 17 goals and providing ten assists without their former talisman Harry Kane.

A new talisman

With the addition of Dominic Solanke from AFC Bournemouth, who scored 19 Premier League goals in a team that finished in the bottom half, Son has a proven number nine to play next to again, which could and should increase his attacking output this season for Spurs.
