Left in tears

Real Madrid icon Marcelo left the pitch in tears after being sent off for a challenge that left his opponent seriously injured.

Attempting a tackle

Fluminense's Marcelo was dribbling past Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez when his leading foot caught the defender, who had been attempting to make a tackle.

Dislocated knee

The Argentinos defender dislocated his left knee when his leg buckled underneath him after Marcelo had stamped on his shin.

Club statement

"Fluminense FC expresses its solidarity and wishes a speedy recovery to Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez, who was injured in an accidental move in tonight's match."

Finished a draw

The game between the two sides in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores ended 1-1.

Best and worst moments

After probably his worst moment on a football pitch, here are the Brazilian icon's best and worst moments in his career.

Real Madrid appearances

Since joining Real Madrid in 2007, Marcelo was a mainstay at left back for the Spanish giants, clocking over 500 appearances for the club.

Overtaking Carlos

A special moment for Marcelo was in a 2-1 win over Villarreal in 2021, coming on in the 68th minute to overtake his Brazilian role model Roberto Carlos in Real Madrid appearances (527), becoming the second most capped foreign player in the club's history.

Moments of rashness

As seen in earlier events this week, the Brazilian defender has had moments of rashness and stupidity in his long, illustrious career.

Kicking a player in the head

In the 87th minute of a tight game against Levante in 2017, Marcelo was tripped after taking a shot at goal. In the aftermath, Marcelo appeared to kick the player in the chest and the face, earning a red card for serious foul play.

Fifth Champions League trophy

The moment Marcelo won his fifth Champions League Final in a 1-0 against Liverpool, the Brazilian had created and finished his trophy haul with Madrid.

Decorated players

His fifth and final Champions League trophy was his 25th piece of major silverware for Real Madrid, helping him become the most decorated Madrid player in history. A moment that he will never forget.

7-1 loss to Germany

In a Brazilian shirt, Marcelo and his teammates never lived up to the huge expectations set on them by legendary Brazilian teams of the past. His worst moment – a 7-1 defeat to Germany at the home World Cup.

Semi Final

Marcelo played the full game in defense and was part of the backline that shipped five goals in the first half of a World Cup Semi-Final. It's the most embarrassing defeat in football history.

Brazilian flare

Across all the years he had played for Real Madrid, Marcelo built his name on his attacking flair and crosses into the box.

Magic versus Bayern

In a game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Marcelo showed all of his flair, dribbling through the whole Bayern team and setting up Cristiano Ronaldo for a tap-in. The greatest solo assist in European history.
