Roster reinforcements

As any good fantasy football manager knows, there’s always work to be done throughout the NFL season. Even if your team has gotten off to a strong start, it’s important to keep your bench filled with high-upside reserves who could step in and lead your team to glory. We’ve got a few suggestions for players to grab ahead of Week 4 in the NFL. Statistics are sourced from Football Reference.

RB Emanuel Wilson, Green Bay Packers

If there was any doubt who the primary ballcarrier was behind Josh Jacobs in Green Bay, that question has been answered in a resounding way after Week 3. Wilson is the preferred backfield alternative, and actually outperformed Jacobs last Sunday. Wilson rushed 12 times for 50 yards, and caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Cast away a waiver claim

Jacobs was dealing with a back injury coming into Week 3’s game. It could be nothing, or it could be something to monitor moving forward. Either way, ensuring that Wilson is on fantasy benches as soon as possible is a strongly recommended move. A.J. Dillon and MarShawn Lloyd, who were once threats to command backfield touches, are both on injured reserve.

WR Jauan Jennings, San Francisco 49ers

There’s no way that Jennings should have been available ahead of Week 3 given the news that both Deebo Samuel and George Kittle would miss San Francisco’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with injuries. If he is still somehow floating around, the price to acquire him via free agency budget or waiver claim just went way up.

A historic performance

Jennings caught 11 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns, as he eviscerated the Rams secondary over and over again. Samuel stands to miss at least one more week of action, which should put Jennings in another position to do damage in Week 4. Brandon Aiyuk also has yet to find his rhythm with Brock Purdy, which is another reason why Jennings has some staying power.

WR Jalen Nailor, Minnesota Vikings

Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison feels like he’s still a few weeks away from returning to the lineup, which has given Nailor the opportunity he’s needed to make a name for himself. The volume hasn’t been anything to write home about, but he’s now scored a touchdown in three consecutive weeks.

A worthy dart throw

Addison was the beneficiary of the attention paid to superstar Justin Jefferson on the other side, and Nailor has benefitted from looser coverages so far in the early going. If you’re in a position where you’re not sure who to start in a flex position, Nailor is certainly worth an add and a look in that capacity.

QB Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings

CBS Sports reports that Darnold is set to undergo tests on his knee after Minnesota’s convincing home win against the Houston Texans. Fantasy managers will want to make sure that they don’t reveal anything serious, but Darnold did not seem too incumbered on Sunday. He’s been a revelation so far and has put himself on the fantasy radar with his play.

Ride the wave

The Minnesota Star Tribune wrote that Darnold and the Vikings made a deafening statement at home by beating a quality team like the Texans. It was important for Minnesota to play well against a strong defense. This helps give Vikings fans and fantasy managers confidence that Darnold can perform against the best the league has to offer.

TE Cole Kmet, Chicago Bears

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Bears coaxed some strong fantasy performances from a few of their players. It helped that the target tree was more streamlined, as veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen missed the game due to injury. That opened looks up for Kmet, who took full advantage.

Airing it out

Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams threw the ball a whopping 52 times in Week 3, which allowed Kmet to catch 10 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Kmet has been known to pop from time to time, and could be a worthy option for owners who are unsure how to move forward with Baltimore’s tight end duo, for example.

QB Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s one of fantasy football’s worst kept secrets. Quarterbacks who have elite mobility are cheat codes, since they can pick up rushing yards with their legs to keep the point total floor high. Fields most certainly belongs in that category, and it might be time to give him a look before it’s too late to scoop him up.

Plain as day

Sports Illustrated thinks that it’s pretty obvious that Fields has won the Steelers’ quarterback competition, and should face little threat of losing his job moving forward. It felt like he had a little more room to showcase his athleticism in Week 3, which is something that Pittsburgh fans and fantasy managers alike love to see.

WR Xavier Legette, Carolina Panthers

All it took was a quarterback change, but Carolina’s offense appears to have been jumpstarted by Andy Dalton. Their attack looked leaps and bounds better than it had with Bryce Young under center, which means it’s finally acceptable to look at pieces of their offense in fantasy football. Legette is someone who could be interesting moving forward.

X marks the spot

Legette only logged three targets from Dalton in Week 3, which usually wouldn’t be enough to get fantasy managers excited. However, veteran wideout Adam Thielen went down with an injury against Las Vegas, which should open up looks for a talented rookie that the franchise wants to get a closer look at.

RB Alexander Mattison, Las Vegas Raiders

Zamir White continues to get the bulk of the work for the Raiders in their backfield, but Mattison has made it clear that he will have some role in this offense moving forward. Even though White got the ball more often against Carolina, Pro Football Focus noted that Mattison played double the amount of snaps that White did.

Oh, it’s you again

Mattison has functioned as more of a thorn in the side of White’s owners, but it might be time to take him a little more seriously. He’s scored three touchdowns in three games this season, and looks to be part of Las Vegas’ passing attack out of the backfield. He’s done enough to warrant a roster spot.
