Germany became the first team to book their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 after a 2-0 win over Hungary in their second group match.

Comfortable win

Overall, it was a comfortable win for the Germans, with goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan.

Controversial Musiala goal

However, the first German goal caused controversy and could well have been disallowed for a foul by Gundogan.

Pushing Orban

In the phase before the goal, the FC Barcelona midfielder pushed Hungarian defender Willi Orban, who lost his footing. This gave Gundogan the opportunity to recapture the ball and gift Musiala the first German goal of the evening.

Danny Makkelie

Dutch ref Danny Makkelie did not blow a foul and pointed to the centre spot, much to the delight of the German home crowd. The video assistant referee (VAR) checked the footage, but did not overrule Makkelie's decision: 1-0 Germany.

Hungary outraged

Hungary were outraged by the decision, which also caused a lot of controversy on social media. The BBC asked football fans "was it a foul in the build up?" on X, formerly Twitter, with many fans leaving no room for doubt.

"Blatant foul"

"It was a blatant foul. Appalling VAR decision. Throw it in the bin!" one fan reacted.

"Worst decision of the tournament"

"Worst decision of the tournament so far, how on earth was that given? Foul all day long," another fan went even further.

"Daylight robbery"

Other fans agreed, writing, "terrible decision", "obvious push" and "daylight robbery".
