Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid claimed the NBA Most Valuable Player award this week, winning it for the first time in his career.

Securing the votes

Embiid secured 73 out of 100 first-place votes, beating out previous MVPs Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who finished second and third, respectively.

Getting over the line

The Sixers' big man had been close to winning the award in the last two seasons, finishing second behind Jokic on both occasions.

Top scorer

Embiid led the league in scoring for the second straight year, averaging 33.1 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 blocks.

'I've been through a lot'

According to TNT's 'NBA Tip Off,' Embiid said: "It's been a long time coming, a lot of hard work. You know I've been through a lot, and I'm not just talking about basketball. I'm talking about everything in life."

Embiid came out shining as the world watched him battle it out against fellow MVP front-runner Nikola Jokic. The Sixers' big man got the better of the Nuggets center, posting 47 points, 18 rebounds, and five assists on the two-time MVP.

In 36 minutes on the floor in Washington, the Philadelphia 76ers MVP posted 48 points, ten rebounds, and one assist. He made 13 of 14 free throws (92.9%) and 17 of 32 from the field (53.1%).
