Who will be the star of the 2024 Olympics?

Jesse Owens, Nadia Comăneci, Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt... The Olympic Games have brought us some of the biggest stars in the history of sport. This summer in Paris, a host of athletes are looking to write their page in the Olympic history book – here's who we'll be keeping a keen eye on.

Noah Lyles - United States

The new star of men's sprinting. World champion in the 100, 200 and 4 x 100 meters, Noah Lyles will be keen to win his first Olympic title after his bronze medal in Tokyo in 2020.

Armand Duplantis - Sweden

Reigning Olympic champion and world record holder, Swede Armand Duplantis will try to push the limits of pole vaulting even further in the French capital this summer.

Simone Biles - United States

Simone Biles is officially back, following her shock exit from gymnastics following a disastrous Tokyo Games. With a total of 37 Olympic and World Championship medals, she is already the most decorated gymnast in history, and judging by her form leading up to this edition of the Games, the 27-year-old is set to add to her total.

Mathieu van der Poel - Netherlands

World champion Mathieu Van der Poel is coming off an exceptional 2023 season. With Pogacar and Van Aert, he will arrive as one of the big favorites in Olympic road cycling. The grandson of Poulidor will want to become a little more legendary in his sport, and he has all the qualities to achieve this.

Sky Brown - Great Britian

16-year-old Sky Brown is already in her second Olympic campaign, and the Tokyo bronze medallist is feeling even more confident about her chances in Paris, telling the Guardian in April that she is looking forward "to putting on a show".

Brittney Griner – United States

Incarcerated for ten months in Russia in 2022, the American basketball player will come to defend the colors of Team USA in Paris. Having become a huge star after her detention in Russia, she will be closely followed at the Olympic tournament.

Antoine Dupont - France

Yes, Antoine Dupont will play in the Olympic Rugby Sevens! The best player in the world will be the star of the show in a home side looking to get their first medal in the event.

Katie Ledecky - United States

Seven Olympic titles, 21 times world champion... At 26, Katie Ledecky has already proven everything. The American swimmer is at the top of her discipline and will try to win gold in her three favorite distances: the 200, 400 and 800 meter freestyle.

Teddy Riner - France

In judo, there is only one king: Teddy Riner. The Frenchman, triple Olympic gold medalist, will be the figurehead of the French delegation in Paris. This competition has been his goal for several years and could, unfortunately, be the last of his career.

Michelle Jenneke - Australia

The Aussie hurdler who was one of the faces of the Rio Olympics has suffered a mixed few years, after missing out on qualification for Tokyo. The 31-year-old will re-enter the Olympics in a better place than her disappointing last run in Rio, having just achieved her personal best time at the FBK Games in June, as covered by World Athletics.

Pan Zhanle - China

After breaking the world record in the 100 meter freestyle, Chinese Pan Zhanle will be the big attraction in the Parisian pools this year alongside Léon Marchand and Katie Ledecky.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce - Jamaica

If Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was beaten by Thompson in the 100 meter at the 2023 world championships, 'Mommy Rocket' remains the star of the women's sprint and, with her, the spectacle is always there.

Eliza McCartney - New Zealand

The Kiwi pole vaulter has reinvented herself these past few years after battling an inflammatory illness. She is regularly clearing 4.80m jumps today and with a personal best of 4.93m, according to New Zealand Athletics, she is a prime candidate for the gold medal.

Karsten Warholm - Norway

King of the 400 meters hurdles, the Norwegian Karsten Warholm will defend his Olympic title in Paris against his biggest rival: Rai Benjamin. A duel at the top that the world of athletics is impatiently awaiting.

Eliud Kipchoge - Kenya

Double Olympic champion, Eliud Kipchoge will be the big favorite for the Olympic marathon after the shocking death of world record holder Kelvin Kiptum earlier this year.
