NBA icon and ten-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony has retired from basketball after a 20-year career in the NBA.

The announcement

Anthony announced his retirement on May 22nd, confirming it via video on his Instagram account.

'Ball on the court'

According to bbc.co.uk, Anthony said: "I remember the days when I had nothing, just a ball on the court and a dream with something more."

True scorer of the ball

The former New York Knick amassed 28,289 points in his career, putting him ninth on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

USA

Anthony never won an NBA championship. However, he was part of three straight Team USA gold medal teams in 2008, 2012, and 2016.

'Goodbye'

In his retirement video, Anthony says: "The time has come for me to say goodbye: to the court where I made my name, to the game that gave me purpose and pride."

Carmelo Anthony dropped 49 points on the Washington Wizards in February 2008, playing against Washington's big three of Antwan Jamison, Caron Butler, and Gilbert Arenas.

The Nuggets beat Washington 111-100, with Anthony producing an efficient night from the field. He made 19 of 25 field goals (76%),  three of three from beyond the arc, and eight of eight from the free throw line.

50 points vs New York Knicks (11/27/2009)

Anthony's first 50-point game came for Denver Nuggets against his future team, the New York Knicks. The Nuggets ran out victors in the contest, securing a 128-125 win.

Getting the ball rolling

Anthony had led Denver to a 12-4 record to open the season and was influential all over the floor in the game against The Knicks, producing six rebounds, and five assists, with 50 points.

50 points vs Houston Rockets (2/7/2011)

Carmelo Anthony showed his elite but selfish scoring mentality in Denver's 108-103 loss to the Houston Rockets, scoring 50 points with zero assists.

Playing defence

Despite the zero assists, Anthony did register a double-double, producing eleven rebounds with his 50 points. The Nuggets legend did his part on the defensive end, having three blocks.

50 points @ Miami Heat (4/2/2013)

After signing with The Knicks in 2011, Carmelo Anthony transformed the franchise, leading New York to a record of 47-26, scoring 50 points in the 102-90 victory.

Anthony made 18 of 26 field goal attempts, seven of ten three-point shots, and seven of eight free throw attempts.

62 points vs Charlotte Bobcats (1/24/2014)

Carmelo Anthony's career high in points came in January 2014, scoring 62 points against the Charlotte Bobcats in a 125-96 win.

No assists!

Anthony famously scored 62 without setting up any baskets for his teammates. Despite that, he did register 13 rebounds and didn't turn over the ball once.
