Bizarre: Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships cancelled due to ... too much wind

On 2 November at noon, the Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships was supposed to start in the Dutch province of Zeeland, but the event did not go as planned.

The conditions were extremely windy on the morning before the race, but organiser Robrecht Stoekenbroek felt confident. "It's not called the National Headwind Cycling Championships for nothing," he told local news outlet Omroep Zeeland.

However, the gusts at the Oosterscheldekering, the largest of the Delta Works in the Netherlands, were brutal and forced Stoekenbroek to take a drastic, but bizarre decision.

Sarcastically, he had to cancel the Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships, because there was ... too much wind.

"We have prepared everything, everything is ready. The weather is crazy, but too intense. The peak speeds are too intense," the organisation explained its decision.

Participants were left disappointed. "It seems like a bad joke," one said.

The organisers added that participants will be refunded and given priority for the next edition of the event.

That next edition will take place when the next storm hits. "When that moment comes, we will be there again," the organisers told, however hoping that the next storm will not be too severe so that the event can take place.
