The first update

Hungary's Barnabas Varga has issued his first update on his condition following a terrible collision in Hungary's final group game against Scotland.

"Barni is over the surgery"

The Hungarian striker shared a post from his wife, Laura Skrapits, that said: "Thank you for your kind, supportive messages. Barni is over the surgery. A little rest is waiting for him, but he'll be fine!"

Fractured cheekbone

It has been revealed the 29-year-old had suffered a fractured cheekbone, which has ruled him out for the rest of the tournament indefinitely, and his dad Andras revealed his surgery was successful.

A slow and tiring game

In a slow game, with almost no chances, Scotland and Hungary seemed on their way to being eliminated at Euro 2024. But everything changed in the 70th minute when Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Unconscious

Varga brutally collided with the goalkeeper's elbow, and Hungary's number 19 was left unconscious and convulsing.

His teammates were terrified

Varga's teammates realised the seriousness of the situation, and the fans in the stands held their breath.

Dominik Szoboszlai, exemplary captain

Dominik Szoboszlai acted like a true captain, grabbing a blanket to cover his teammate and prevent him from being filmed, before Varga was stretchered off.

At Varga's side

Szoboszlai accompanied Varga for a moment, making it clear to his teammate that he was not alone in his struggle. The Liverpool player's action went viral.

Hungarian Football Association

Fortunately, the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) provided information on the player's condition just a few minutes later on X, saying that Varga was in a stable condition.

Hospital in Stuttgart

"The Hungarian national team player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news on his status," the MLSZ wrote.

Surgery

An hour and a half later, the MLSZ gave a new update, reporting that the 30-year-old striker suffered a "concussion", as well as having broken "several bones in his face" and "will most likely have to undergo surgery".

Late goal

The good news of the night was that Kevin Csoboth scored in the last minute of extra time to give Hungary three important points and keep them dreaming of the next round as one of the best third-placed teams.

To end the night, the Hungarians took a photo to remember, with the whole team celebrating the victory and Varga's shirt in the picture.

"Not under any kind of risk"

According to The Sun, Hungary manager Marco Rossi said: "Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn't realise it was a dangerous situation. We can now say that Barney is not under any kind of risk."
