Euro 2028: Automatic qualification in doubt for UK and Ireland despite hosting

Sole bid

The United Kingdom and Ireland are set to host the European Championships in 2028 after Turkey withdraw their bid.

Focusing on 2032

Turkey have now agreed to a joint bid for the 2032 edition of the tournament with Italy as their co-hosts.

First timers

Whilst England and Scotland have played host to major tournament games in the past, this will be the first time for the Republic of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Need final approval

Whilst they are now all but certain to be the hosts, the governing body, UEFA, will need to give final approval.

Will they qualify?

When tournaments are hosted by one or two countries, the hosts receive automatic qualification. Given the UK and Ireland is comprised of five footballing nations, UEFA is undecided whether they should grant all the teams a guaranteed spot.

Three spots

The Independent is reporting UEFA may be willing to give three automatic places. There is some talk of a ‘mini-tournament’ to decide which of the five sides qualify.

Stadiums in use

There is set to be 10 stadiums used for the tournament, these are: Wembley Stadium, Principality Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Etihad Stadium, Everton Stadium (under construction), St James' Park, Villa Park, Hampden Park, Aviva Stadium, Casement Park (under construction).

Another Wembley final

Wembley hosted England vs Italy in the final of Euro 2020 and will presumably be set to host the final again in 2028.
