In the dynamic world of football, where player valuations can be as unpredictable as a last-minute goal, we have seen major price drops this season! Football Benchmark provided a recent analysis that looks at a list of players who have devalued the most since the beginning of the 2023/24 season. We also looked at transfermarkt.com to analyze the most recent player devaluations.

Multiple factors

Serious or long-lasting injuries and contracts nearing their end are the most obvious reasons for some noticeable declines. But, how do you value players overall?

How do you value players?

Many factors come into consideration when calculating a player's market value such as age, position, ongoing contract, salary, injury record, technical performance data, international experience, image, and the financial strength of the selling club. Talent and potential are also taken into account but it's completely subjective.

Scouts and analysts

It's not an easy job for scouts or football analysts, as there is no perfect formula or algorithm that ensures a player's success. There are many variables at play, some are completely random. Scouts must rely on statistics and gut instincts. Let's take a look at some player devaluations!

Marcus Rashford

The Red Devils left winger started the 2023/24 season with an approximate value of €75m and dropped down to €70m. The 26-year-old homegrown player has experienced many ups and downs throughout his career at Manchester United, but this 2023/24 season has proved to be especially challenging for the entire squad.

Arda Güler

The young Turkish midfielder who recently joined Real Madrid in the 2023/24 summer transfer window has experienced a slight devaluation following his injury at the start of the season. He is currently valued at €15m.

Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips has experienced a major devaluation since the start of the season. Manchester City purchased Phillips for €50m, however, injuries and a lack of playing time have seen the English international drop down in price to €28m. So far this season, he has been involved in 10 games.

Yeremi Pino

The Spanish international who currently plays for Villarreal CF was valued at €40m at the start of the season. The young 21-year-old striker recently experienced a horrible ACL injury which caused his price to drop to €30m.

Jack Harrison

Jack Harrison experienced a price drop following Leeds's relegation from the Premier League. He went from €28m to €22m after securing a loan deal with Everton.

Moisés Caicedo

The Ecuadorian midfielder joined Chelsea for €118m during the summer transfer window. A whooping transfer deal that has left many fans questioning his price tag. Caicedo is now valued at €90m after his discrete Premier League season start.

Presnel Kimpembe

The French international and PSG defender has experienced a major devaluation following his Achilles tendon rupture. Kimpembe was valued at €35m at the start of the season, and now he is valued at €20m.

Rayan Cherki

The Olympique Lyonnais homegrown player has devalued due to his drop in form and lack of minutes on the pitch this season. The 20-year-old French midfielder still has room for improvement, currently valued at €25m in contrast to the original €30m price tag at the start of the season.

Matthjis de Ligt

De Ligt moved to Bayern Munich after a whooping €68m transfer deal was agreed with Juventus in 2022. The Dutch defender has struggled to maintain a steady form with the Bavarian giant, dropping slightly in value. He is now valued at around €65m.

Christopher Nkunku

Chelsea FC secured a whooping €60m transfer deal for Christopher Nkunku at the start of the season, raising his value to €80m. The French international player suffered a bad hip injury at the start of the season which dropped his value to €75m.

Thibaut Courtois

Real Madrid's goalkeeper has experienced a major devaluation following his ACL injury at the beginning of the season. At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, he was valued at €45m and now stands around €35m.

Neymar Jr

Neymar, much like Courtois, is recovering from an ACL injury. After departing PSG to Al-Hilal, his value dropped radically. At the start of the 2023/24 season he was valued at €60m and now he stands at €45m.

 

 

Casemiro

The 31-year-old veteran midfielder has experienced a significant price drop following his departure from Real Madrid. It hasn't been easy for him at Old Trafford. Manchester United secured his services for €70m but due to his poor form, his value dropped down to €30m!

Mason Mount

Manchester United secured a €64m deal for Mount, with high prospects for the young midfielder. His original value at the start of the season was €60m and now stands at €45m. He is currently injured, further adding to the Erik ten Hag's fitness issues in the squad.

Sandro Tonali

The Italian midfielder was involved in a major betting scandal that resulted in heavy competitive sanctions. The 23-year-old Newcastle player was valued at €60m at the start of the season but his price dropped to €40m.

Reece James

The Chelsea right-back dropped in value following his recurring injuries and lack of minutes on the pitch. At the start of the season, he was valued at €60m in comparison to €50m now.

Jadon Sancho

Manchester United secured a whooping €85m transfer deal for Jadon Sancho, but after several disputes with Erik ten Hag, many believe he is looking to depart Old Trafford. His value has dropped from €55m to €25m due to his lack of games. He has now returned to his former club, Borussia Dortmund!
