Why does Princess Sofia of Sweden always wear the same tiara?
The jewelry collection of the Swedish Royal House is one of the most envied in Europe. A collection of numerous majestic pieces with endless gemstones that are simply breathtaking. One of them is the Palmette tiara which is usually worn by princess Sofia of Sweden, the wife of Prince Carl Philip.
The thing is that since Sofia Hellqvist officially became a princess after her marriage to the second son of King Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, she has almost always worn that same tiara.
There are many speculations surrounding the fact that the princess of Sweden does not wear any other historic and valuable tiara of the royal Bernadotte family.
According to Swedish media, like Svensk Dam magazine, the explanation has to do with the fact that Sofia has a bad relationship with her sisters-in-law (especially with Madeleine of Sweden) and that her access to the family jewelry collection might be restricted.
Whichever the reason, the Palmette tiara is a true masterpiece that is covered in diamonds and offers the possibility of changing its gemstones according to one's taste.
The tiara is known in some circles as the "transformer" tiara because of its versatility. It can be styled with pearls, turquoise stones, and emeralds.
The tiara can also be worn without any gemstones. In that case, it seems more like a crown than a tiara.
What's its history? We don't have to go very far to talk about the origin of the tiara. Compared to the other tiaras and crowns of the Swedish Royal House, this is one of the most modern pieces. It goes back to 2006 and it wasn't even a tiara at first…
In 2006, during an official visit to Thailand, Sophia's mother-in-law, the Queen Silvia of Sweden, received a choker as a gift from king Bhumibol Adulyadej. She decided not to use it at the time. Or at least, not publicly.
Instead, Queen Silvia of Sweden turned the choker into a tiara and decided to give it to her daughter-in-law as a wedding present.
The wedding of Sofia Hellqvist and Carl Philip of Sweden was celebrated in Stockholm in June 2015.
Sofia Hellqvist was glowing that day, partially due to the incredible jeweled tiara that was specially made for her.
That was the first time that the wife of the King's son wore the beautiful choker-turned-tiara that has now become the princess' best ally.
Evil tongues of the Swedish kingdom say that the tiara was gifted because it doesn't have any historic past. They claim it proves that Sophia doesn't have access to the Bernadotte family jewelry collection. However, that theory is not at all confirmed. In fact, the princess has been able to wear other royal pieces on several occasions.
In this picture, Sophia is wearing a simple tiara that belongs to her sister-in-law, Princess Victoria. She wore it in 2016 at the Nobel Prize Ceremony — one of the most important events for the Swedish Royal House.
In 2017, we saw her wearing another jewel, the Diamond Six Button tiara, at a gala dinner in honor of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway.
It seems the Swedish media haven't really figured out why the princess always wears the same tiara. Perhaps the princess is more comfortable wearing a jewelry piece that is really her own.
Other European princesses, like Marie Cavallier, are also faithful to one specific piece. Queen Margrethe gifted Marie the tiara in the picture when she married prince Joachim of Denmark in 2008. The fact that she wears this tiara a lot is probably related to a personal choice instead of a royal imposition.
Each tiara has its own story. And now you know - more or less - the story behind Princess Sofia of Sweden's Palmette tiara.
