The sudden death of Canadian comedian Nick Nemeroff, 32 years old

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother." Instead of the usual jokes and sharp comments on his social media accounts, it was this shocking message the followers of Canadian comedian Nick Nemeroff read in the night of June 27 to 28.

Nick Nemeroff was only 32 years old when he died. No information about the cause or circumstances of his death was divulged.

Both his family and his colleagues were shocked by his sudden death. Around the same time as his family, Nemeroff's management at Grand Wave Entertainment confirmed that he had passed away.

Nemeroff was raised in the city of Montreal and attended high school there.

Initially, his career plans were in broadcasting, as he got a degree in Radio and Television program at Toronto Metropolitan University. But in the end, he would be mostly in front of the cameras and not behind them.

"We have been so proud to watch Nick grow in to one of Canada's most popular and respected comedians," his management wrote. A sign of his success was the album (sarcastically titled) 'The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life' in 2020.

The album earned him a nomination for a Juno Award in 2021. As his family would write on his social media accounts, "Nick’s dedication to stand-up comedy was admirable and produced amazing results."

In 2018, the Canadian comedian appeared in Conan O'Brien's show 'I'm with Coco.' His family emphasized on his social media that it was an achievement to appear "on Conan before the age of 30."

Comedy these days takes place on various platforms: the stage, TV, streaming channels, and social media. Nick Nemeroff was active everywhere. He regularly shared his funny jokes and comments on Instagram and Twitter.

He was not afraid to face other comedians in the harshest roasts. In fact, his last performances on tv were episodes 2 and 6 of CTV’s Roast Battle Canada in June 2022. "See me go #roastmode," he told his followers, and he thanked the program "for allowing me to be really mean on tv."

Fellow comedians, fans and family mourn the death of the young, rising star. As his management agency wrote, his was "truly  a devastating loss to the Toronto and Montreal comedy communities... Nick will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered."

His family used their access to his own accounts on Twitter and Instagram to leave tributes behind for the unexpectedly deceased comedian.

"He drew acclaim in Canada and the US, becoming both a 'comic's comic' and a hit with crowds who were enamoured by his unique cadence, labyrinthine deadpan, and fresh take on misdirection-driven comedy," they wrote, admiringly.

"If Nick was on a comedy show, he was guaranteed to leave with new fans. And he deserved to, because comedy was, in many ways, his life."

"Endlessly sweet, supportive of others, humble about his many skills and achievements, Nick Nemeroff lived his life doing what he loved, and that is how he will be remembered. RIP Nick. We love you," wrote his family.

The last message of the comedian on Twitter was a retweet of a pro-choice account. It's not surprising, then, that his family requested "that in lieu of flowers, 'donations in his memory may be made to the Planned Parenthood chapter of your choice,'" per Deadline.
