The Kids are back! New 'The Kids in the Hall' series on Amazon Prime

After many years Canada's favorite sketch comedy troupe 'The Kids in the Hall' has returned to our screens. The original CBC TV series wrapped 27 years ago. It came back on May 13 with a reboot on Amazon Prime.

The show consists of eight episodes produced by Project 10, Lorne Michael's Broadway Video, and Canadian production company. It includes original members Bruce McCulloch, Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Kevin McDonald, and Scott Thompson.

Even though it has been years since they've worked all together, Scott Thompson told CBC News that the group had no trouble getting back into the swing of things. "We just have always been together — even when we don't see each other for a long time, we just fall right back into it. It's like family. Family you like."

In an interview with CBC News, Dave Foley described the series in the following manner: "It's just us doing sketch comedy, at this stage in our life. Trying to reflect the world we're in and make funny. All we're doing is trying to make each other laugh — and if other people laugh, that's just a really nice side-effect."

In 2010, 'The Kids in the Hall' cast reunited for an eight-episode miniseries titled' Death Comes to Town.' They have done several live shows together. However, the reboot is the group's first sketch comedy tv series since 1995.

Viewers are not only treated to some classic 'Kids in the Hall' humor but also to performances by A-list guests such as Jay Baruchel, Catherine O'Hara, Mark Hamill, and Will Forte.

'The Kids in the Hall' was known for being ahead of the times when it first came out and pushed the limits of what was accepted on Canadian television.

Mark McKinely told CBC News, "I don't think we'll be pushing the same boundaries, but there's going to be new boundaries. We don't really think in terms of, 'Oh we're going to smash [boundaries].' It's kind of, we write what makes the other guys laugh."

The original series was a pioneer in queer representation on television, which created controversy at the time. Scott Thompson's character Buddy Cole is a good example of this and how the show was ahead of the times in many ways.

The character Buddy Cole was a gay socialite that loved to poke fun at his own life and the gay community. For example, in Season 1, Episode 20, Buddy talks about being a Canadian in show business, saying, "Americans know as much about Canada as straight people do about gays."

These days, things are pretty different, as Scott Thompson told CBC in an interview: "It's a thousand times different.… My generation, I'm a war vet — like, I came out into a war. So for this, this is like peacetime. For me, how can it get any better?"

'The Kids in the Hall' got its start in 1988 and was renewed for a total of five seasons until its end in April of 1995.

The unique show helped many people feel less isolated and to feel okay with being different from the status quo, earning the comedy troupe many dedicated fans.

It also became legendary for the unique characters created on the show. Who doesn't remember 'Cabbage Head', 'Chicken Lady', or the 'Head Crusher' sketch??

In addition to the series on Amazon Prime, the comedy group is also the subject of a new documentary titled, 'The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks.'

The documentary appeared at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto in early May, and it arrived on Amazon Prime on May 20.
